  1. I am trying to convert some of my files to WMV using Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. I am using Windows XP Pro SP1 and DirectX 9b. I have tried several avi files, however, each time I begin to encode I get the following DirectX error message..."0x80040212 Cannot allocate memory because no size has been set" The only thing I can find after searching quite a while is the return code related to this error as "VFW_E_SIZENOTSET" I am at a loss as to how to set a size and correct this error. What options do you see (aside from not to convert to WMV"

Do you think installing the latest verson of WME9 (although I believe that is what I have)...I could try to uninstall it and reinstall it. Or...do you think updating to DirectX9c might do the trick?

    Thanks

Babyboo - Are you using the wizard to configure your settings, or using the session setting? The size parameter that is not being set to generate that error message is for buffer size. It is a DirectX error.

I have tried it both ways, with and without the wizard. I have serached everywhere I can think of and haven't been able to figure out a way to set a size and eliminate that DirectX error. Do you think updating my DirectX to 9c would help?

Sorry - had to get to work. Ok, I tested this at home, and I was using 9.0b, same as I am at work. For testing, maybe we can just use the wizard. I had some additional questions about your setup, but I was rushed getting out of the house. What are you selecting for your distribution method, and your encoding options? Are you using pre-defined templates, or are you using a custom profile?

This screen , as you can see is where the buffer size gets set from the wizard.

I don't see what it might hurt to install DirectX 9.0c, but it should work under b, unless there is a corrupted file. It is probably the quickest thing to eliminate, but I have no problem troubleshooting with you if you want to go that route.

If you wanted to send me a small clip of the file you're trying to convert, I can test it on my machine. I would just need a section of the clip, and what settings you want tried.

  7. I am at work now and don't seem to have any problems converting here using DirectX 8.1 on a Windows 2000 Pro. I didn't realize that the drop downs is what sets the buffer in DirectX. Since I am interested in emailing the wmv files my selections were:

Content Distribution = File Download (computer playback)

Video = VHS quality (250 kbs vbr)
Audio = CD Quality Audio (vbr)

No problem with those settings on my source with 9.0b. I got your PM, so I'll wait to hear back how the DirectX re-install/upgrade goes. Good luck.
