hey all.. im a newbie.. I'm looking for another program that encodes faster than tmpgenc. It takes 2 hours to encode a 4 minute video to mpeg 2 720x576. There's got to be a better way! no?

  2. 2 hours? There is something wrong, that shouldnt take more then 5 mins, I would think.

At worst it should take you about 4X runtime with TMPGEnc - so in your case, about 16 minutes...

... Unless you are using filters. You've only got an 800MHz CPU I see but it still [i]shouldn't[/b] take 2 hours for 4 minutes, unless you're placing some serious load on your PC while it encodes. You might want to try some of the speed enhancement tips I've listed in this post.

Also, CCE is quicker than TMPGEnc FWIW.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Mainconcept is also quicker, however we are talking degrees. I agree that your times are way out of whack, and you must have some serious issues elsewhere to cause this. What was your source specs ? If tempgenc is also doing resizes and other filters then things will take much longer.

Ultimately, the only way to substantially increase your encoding speed is to upgrade your CPU, get lots of memory, encode from disk to disk (i.e. source on disk a, target on disk b) and use good quality source that does not require filtering during the encoding process.
