    In the 'Input plug-in setting' make sure that the 'VFAPI Frame Server file reader' (in the Standard input' list) and 'Avisynth/VirtualDub script reader' (in the VFAPI plugin' list) are selected, and most importantly make sure that the "AVI file reader" is not selected.

    Re-start TMPGenc and you should now be able to frameserve succesfully.

    When you want to do an AVI directly, just re-enable the 'AVI file reader'.
