I have a very good understanding of aspect ratios and MPG2, etc., but I'm wondering if I'm getting something wrong.

Specifically, I've run across several anamorphic DVDs the ripped MPEG2 from which has no black border at the top and bottom at all. Now, if the DVD is truly anamorphic (as reported on the box), would this not mean that the video has an A/R of 1.77:1? The reason I ask is that upon looking up the tech specs for such movies in IMDB, they are almost invariably reported to be 1.85:1.

But a 16x9 transfer of a 1.85:1 movie should have roughly 10 lines of black border at the top and bottom, should it not?

    NTSC 480 x (16x9) = ~854 / 1.85 = ~460, thus 480-460=20 (10 lines top and bottom).

My thinking is that if video is self-labeled anamorphic and there is no black border at all, the A/R can only be 1.77 . . . right?

    Am I missing something?

No one has an opinion? If I'm doing something wrong, I'd like to know
