  1. Hey dudes, i got a dvd that needs to be converted into a qt movie (.mov) so i can stream it on the web.

i know that i can extract the mpg from iso buster or gordians knot... but once i have the mpeg file thats when the problem arises.

all the applications for convertion seem to be mac only eg: imovie, mpeg streamclip.

is there any pc convertors out there?

please some guidence would be most appreciated.

    thank you.

  5. What's the audio format of the MPEG2? Can you view / hear it normally? Can you choose an output audio option in QT Pro?

  7. Try out Xilisoft Video Converter, you can rip a few popular video files like VOB, MPEG, avi, etc to .mov.

I've got QT Pro 6, too, and have never been able to get sound from an MPEG-to-MOV conversion. So, you're not alone. Because of that, my choice for streaming has been WMV streams or RealVideo streams.

What OS do you use? Whenever I encode streaming files, I use my Win98SE partition (I have XP, too). Windows Media Encoder 7.1 can make direct MPG-to-WMV conversions:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/wmenc71/7.1/W98NT42KMe/EN-US/wmencoder71.exe

And, while RealProducer 10 costs $$$, their G2 freeware producer is available from many locations ... like:

    http://fdl.ex.ac.uk/download/rprodg2.exe

The catch there is that MPG files must first be converted to AVI files ... and then into RM (Real media) files.

I suspect those two versions would also work on XP though I've never tried them on my XP partition.

I've not tried Xilisoft Video Converter so I can't comment on it. It's $35 here:

    Trialware is available.

  9. wow thanks for the posts guys, what community support... it great.

i went to the apple website and posted on their forum, this is what they said:

"QT does not support the export of sound from an mpeg-1 file:QT Mpeg Limitations. One workaround is to download a program like VirtualDub, which can convert the mpeg-1to an uncompressed avi with both sound and video. QT will be able to read that format and export both sound and video to your choice of .mov compression formats. VirtualDub is a freeware and automatically converts mpeg to uncompressed avi without having to change any settings. Simply load the mpeg and then use Save as Avi from the File menu."

...which makes me wonder why there's no warning note in QT when people try to do that. But, it's nice to know that QT will accept AVI imports and export them with sound intact. Problem there is that conversions take a heckuva long time (VDub is fast, but not the QT part) ... and uncompressed AVIs are bigger than MPEGs, which could mean even more time. Windows Media Encoder 7.1 and RealProducer are much faster, without the sound issues. And, they stream just as well (or better) than QT streams. Good luck.

  11. If the video is from a DVD as you mention it is probably in MPEG2. You will need to use VirtualDubMod and not the regular Virtual Dub which doesn't work with MPEG2 files. Other than that they function basically the same for your purposes.
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.
