Wouldl you get the same quality if you capture a VHS tape to AVI and then encode to MPEG using TMPGEnc as opposed to capturing using a ATI 9000pro card straight to MPEG?
This is using no filters in TMPGEnc. Both captures would be using a JVC 9800 SVHS and maybe both also run through a AVT-8710.

    Hello,

Capture to mpeg only. The less you fool with a video file the better the final outcome will be, in my opinon

I think you are going to get oppinnions supporting both methods. I would personally capture straight to mpeg and 1/2D1 resolution. Others may say to capture using huffy or picvideo codecs then encode to mpeg using tmpgenc. Quality is a very personal and subjective thing. Your best bet would be to do it both ways and see which you prefer.

  4. I have done both ways not much diff but the only problem when you cap to mpeg you may come out with a file larger then a dvd can hold so you have to play with the bitrate on the ati alot to find out how much time/space

I'll go with AVI, at the highest resolution you can. If there's any editing/filtering/resizing to be done, it's much easier to do this on AVI than it is on MPEG IMO. At least then you can customise the bitrate and frame size to suit so that you use up the entire DVD while maximising the quality.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Depends if you want to edit. If so, AVI would be better. If not, do straight to MPEG. The hardware and software is good, therefore good results, if using good settings.

AVI vs MPEG. Neither is better. They're just different.

  7. I have the 9000Pro too

I capture to AVI only if I plan on doing some editing and stuff like adding transitions. Then encode to MPEG

I capture straight to MPEG only if I'm not doing any editing.

I like to use ATI software for both AVI and MPEG
