Have an issue with not achieving propiate burning speed with 8x DVD-R discs (Verbatim DVD-R 8x). Burning a 4.5GB DVD-R 8x disc takes almost 14 minutes to complete incl leadin/out. (Yes Nero says writing at 8x / 11xxx kb/s or something). This is alomst the same time as for 4x discs on my computer. My burner is a NEC ND-6500A laptop writer rated to 8x +/-.
I have tried different disc types though the writer will only write 8x to a limited selection of media due to??
The writer is orginal an ND-6100A_+ but with firmware upgrade to 6500A_+/-. My sustem is an Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop with Pentium M1.7 Dothan and 512mb RAM, WinXP SP2. Burning software is Nero 6.6.0.1.(Have tried different versions). Tried burning with DVDDecrypter but only gained speed between 1.9-2.1x.
Anyone got a clue?

read about CAV and CLV. 8x media only burn at 8x part of the Disk. Add in the lead in and out times and you get average speeds a lot less than 8x
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
Thank you for the answer.
Yes I have read about the different ways of burning, CAV/CLV. But that doesnt solve why my burner take about 14 mintues to complete a disc when burning at 8x speed. Its is stated where I read about the aboove methods that this should take between 8-10 minutes at 8x speed.
In my situation, the way it works now my 4x burns using just less than 1 minute than 8x burns to complete -
DMA mode? PIO?
Perhaps your ASPI layer is borked?
...All I can think of right now - haven't had enough morning coffee yet :P . -
The burner starts at a lower speed than 8X because the drive can't spin the disc fast enough at the inner part to have enough real estate passing by fast enough for an 8X burn. So it starts at a slower speed. My Pioneer 107 starts at 5.9X until it's 10 or 15% into the burn. Then the buffers empty and it spools up to 8X and away it goes
An 8X burn takes me about 8 minutes.
The problem sure sounds like an interface issue to me -

Thanks. I will check out the tips you gave me when I get home from work this evening. But what do you mean by PIO? -
This is really fustrating!!!! Ultra-DMA ok, aspi reinstalled, new nero and another new firmware flash. And still using 13m50s to complete a 8x burn
