  1. I know it's heresy to even imply anything even slightly negative about Taiyo Yuden discs, but I’ve been working my way through a 50 pack of TYG02 (FujiFilm DVD-R, 8X) and I’ve had more problems with them (bad burns, skipping.) than I’ve had with some less illustrious brands of 4X discs. Perhaps it is because the new dyes in the 8x are becoming less compatible with my increasingly behind the curve 4X top burn equipment (Sony DRX-510UL.)

I would be the first one to say that the TYG01 is the gold standard for 4x burners, but for my equipment at least, I’m thinking that TYG02 is something I’m going to stay away from, at least until I get an 8X burner.

Anyone else having similar experiences with even good 8X media in their 4X burners?

In my opinion why get 8x media when your burner does not support it. Good advice that you will wait until you get a 8x burner. I only over speed RICOH 4x DVD+R discs to burn @8x with my Plextor 708A drive which is a feature that Plextor supports. I would suggest just burn those 8x DVD-R discs at 4x speed and you should be ok.

  3. Good post.
I too have a 4x burner (Plextor-708A) and it's relatively new and hope to use it for some time to come. I bought a few hundred 4X TY's from Rima when the 01's were discontinued and, as my stock dwindles , I am curious about the compatibility of 8x TY's or Maxells and my 4x burner.
I will upgrade if needed or will stay as is if 8x doesnt give any problems.
i am totally satisfied with my current 4x speed.
Hope some of the elders that have made the change to 8x on 4x burners will "yea" or "nay" on the compatibility issue.
    Thanks.

[edit]...budz...your post hit before mine. Thanks for the info. So you are saying that as long as one sticks with the 4x burn speed the speed of the media should not matter. That sounds like good news.

I have a 4X burner (Pioneer 105) and I am also working my way through a new order of TYG02's and haven't had a single problem. It burns at 4X just fine.

Your welx. I've used the 8x speed discs in my Plextor 708A burned at 4x speed with no playback problems.

Sounds more like a burner or firmware issue at the most.

My A05s don't have any issues with TYG02 8x media, nor TDK 8x or MCC 8x media.

My NEC 2500 does 8x on any TY media, and yes they play back fine. NEC 3500s will do 16x on the TYG02 media, but I burn at 8x just because.

I put write quality on the burner side more than the media side any more. In todays market most media is made cheaply in Taiwan (TDK, Verbatim, Prodisc, Optodisc, CMC) and the quality isn't all that high, it's roughly where it was 3 years ago. But the laser units inside the burners themselves have come a far way from where they used to be.

I can see this while burning the same media across 4 generations of burners (A03, A05, NEC 2500, NEC 3500). Each new burner supports the cheap media better and better. While my A03 burns the newer TDK and Vertaims like crap when compared to some of the older Singapore and Japan made stock I still have left for testing purps.

I can even get good results burning 4x Optodisc DVD-R with my NEC 2500 at an 8x burn. Does it look as good in KProbe as TY? Of course not, but my DVD Players don't play them back any differently

My advise would be to sell your older 4x unit, or perhaps give it away for christmas, and plunk down the $70 to get a new burner like the NEC (for near perfect +R and perfect -R) or the Benq (for perfect +R and so.so -R).

  7. Quick clarification to some of the above.

Why buy 8X burn speed discs when I have 4X top speed burner?

It was on sale at a great price!

I agree with you on that although some don't particularly like Plextor dvd burners. Some have had bad experiences with the 708A drive. It's a good drive when using the recommended brands of dvd media that plextor supports. Such as TAIYO YUDEN, RICOH, MAXELL (but not the ones made in TAIWAN because those are manufactured by RITEK). Although I've used RITEK G04 with no problems until the quality began to go downhill. I've had my 708A for a year now with no problems at all. The 708A drive now supports bitsetting for DVD+R media when using Plextools 2.18, Plextor firmware 1.08 and the latest version of NERO BURN.

In my case, 4x media wasn't available at the time I needed some.
