That'll do. Throw a few sleeping bags in the back.

There are plenty of free campsites where you can just pull in and park. They're all over in the west. They have bathrooms and some even have showers. And there are the nicer parks where you pay a small fee for shower priviledges.

Check in with some auto insurance websites. They should be able to give you an email response. The requirements vary from state to state, so it really depends upon what state you are buying the car in so in your case it's most likely California insurance requirements.

    Couple of things I'd suggest.

Pacfic Coast Highway Between LA and San Fran, Sequoia National Monument, CA, Yosemite, CA, Death Valley, CA, Grand Canyon, AZ, Arches National Monument, UT, Monument Valley, UT, Carlsbad Caverns, NM, Glacier National Park, ?ND I think, Natchez Parkway, Runs through 2 or 3 states, Blue Ridge Parkway runs through 3 or 4 states, Outer Banks in NC, Smithsonian Museums in Washington DC, Acadia National Park, MN, Niagara Falls, NY and Canada, Around the Great Lakes Area,

There's a ton of shit, best thing to do is pick up the paper version of a Rand Mcnally map and start looking. I've found that to be the best map. If you find that you'll be going through Pennsylvania let me know and I can direct you to a few things, not much here of particular interest though it's all trees. Unless you want to see the world's largest all concrete bridge or the world's largest Glacial Pothole

BTW some of the mountainous stuff such as Yosemite, Yellowstone.....ettc. will not be accesible with a regular car at this time of the year. In march, probably not even with a four wheel drive with chains. The rear entrance heading west into Yosemite isn't open for general traffic until after the end of May. Before then 4 wheel drives and chains are required before they will even allow you on the road on a good day.. Keep that in mind while planning your trip. This won't be an issue for most of the stuff in the east, suggest you plan the latter part of your trip for these areas, stick to the south and east for the first part.

Here's a pic of a lower mountain pass 100 miles north of the one at Yosemite from The last week in May. That's me btw, let the photshopping begin

Try to sneak in Boston, MA.... not too far from your NYC stop... You will be glad you did.

Also, if you are not too far from Upstate NY stop in Skeneateles, NY (Between Syracuse and Auburn)

Boston is beautiful....just don't go to Cheers (The Bullfinch Pub). You can go look at it but don't go inside....you'll be disappointed and broke when you leave...

Hershey, Pennsylvania - home of the world famous Hershey's Chocolate Company!

    http://www.hersheypa.com/

    "The Sweetest Place on Earth"

It's about 10 minutes from my home. Amusment park opens some time in late April. There are other tours available as well.

If you go to Washington DC area, (2 hours away from Hershey, PA) the Smithsonian is an excellent place to visit and most if not all of the museums are free to get into - you'd just have to find somewhere to park and pay for that.

    http://www.si.edu/

My favorite is the Air and Space Museum - the new building they just built by the airport houses the best stuff - a Concorde and the Original Space Shuttle Enterprise..... you can catch a bus to it from the original Air and Space museum at the Smithsonian mall area....

And if you are in the area around April and May - and my favorite hockey team gets their act together this season, you can catch the Hershey Bears Hockey Club (oldest in the AHL) play in the playoffs in Hershey as well... Any hockey fan can appreciate good playoff hockey! It's the best! (The AHL feeds a lot of the players to the soon to be defunct NHL - if they don't get off their arses and start their season this year - stupid lockout)

Anyhow - some interesting stuff in this area - and we are about an hours drive from Gettysburg.

  12. Cheers all for the suggestions.

@Coalman: I've been to quite a few of those places in 2000 but going back for sure because they are amazing. We went the same time in 2000 but my Grandpa knew about the blocked roads so we planned around it.

I do remember that road because they was a massive pothole that threw everything around in the motorhome. Also a public phone in the middle of no where.

Thanks for the heads up though. Anything else like that is much appreciated.

I plan on picking up a copy of the Rand McNally book that has all the Wal Mart locations in the back because they allow you to stay in there carparks overnight, same with Home Depot.

@Hech54: You wouldn't believe the people who'd listen to us speak and then go "are you from NJ"

@Dr Dos: What are the highlights to see in Boston MA?

@Shoozleboy: Definitely want to see the Smithsonian amongst other monuments and museums.

Lake Louise is beautiful. We saw it last time we went in 2000 and it was frozen over so I'd love to see it when its thawed out.

  15. pacmania,

how is it that you are able to take a 3/4 month break from work? I envy you, dude.

If I took that kind of leave, I would find myself jobless. Enjoy your break.

    Regards,

    Prasanna.

Since you have seen most of what I suggested take one of my last suggestions. The Blue Ridge Parkway" supposed to very nice in the spring. It's over 500 miles long, Starts in Tennesee in Smokey Mountain National Park and ends in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (just west of Washington DC) For the most part it parralel's the Appalachian Trail which is footpath extending from Maine to Georgia.

    -or-

The outer Banks in NC, it's the beach so may not be that much fun during those months but is very scenic. The island on the southern end is only accesible by ferry, either going Norht or South. At the Northern end is Kitty Hawk where the Wright Brothers first flew also not very far from Washington DC.

I'm planning on doing it the year after I finish university (2006) so technically I wouldn't have a job to take time off from.

Thats one of the things I've got to sort out because if I do this I can't get recruited straight out of university into a graduate program.

Definitely look into them. Even though I've been to a lot of the places before we'll probably go through them again so my friend can experience them.

I had plans with friends to do this as a motorcycle trip a few years back. Work got thin where I was living and the trip was cancelled.

i used to do this stuff all the time but kids/family have curtailed it
    first some quick tips:
start going south in may, move north for june/july. this is for temperature comfort. the us northwest is still cold in may and may be icy. the south will be hot in july-sep, some places oppressively so. check the van for working air conditioning. also consider a gps system and AAA towing for emergency.

the camping recommendation is spot-on. you'll soon tire of sleeping in the van. save it for stormy weather. get a cheap roomy tent, good sleeping pads, and a cheap sleeping bag rated for anticipated night temps. i 'll link to good starting points when time permits.

the above route assumes point of entry at la. about 13,ooo miles (21,000 km, for the metric people ) the route hits many of the best places to visit and best places to see. i'll list them soon.

camping is under $20 today's money a night virtually anywhere. most have showers and many have clothes washing facilities. save old underwear and socks. you can use them once along the way in remote areas and just throw them away. saves tracking down washing machines.

for your best visiting experience, make the trip on motorcycle. a little more expensive than buying a van, but a much more rewarding experience.

whatever you decide on please photo/video the trip. we'd all like to see (and a great way to save the memories)......

  20. Great post enstg8er!

We are going to take a GPS and a mobile phone (tri/dual band) and also a laptop loaded with map software so we should have the communications/directions part down. Chuck in an SAS survival guide in case we get lost in the middle of nowhere.

We were planning on buying a tent once we arrive in the States so we can sleep outside when weather permits. Most rural places we were just going to free camp like we did in 2000 to keep costs down.

Air con is a definite must but the temps don't worry me too much, I'm an Aussie remember.

LA will be most likely entry point because its the major hub of US/Aus flights and the cheapest. I think the route we take will be longer because we want to spend more time in Canada due to a few relatives and friends to visit in the centre part, which I'm told is the hill billy section.

camping is under $20 today's money a night virtually anywhere. most have showers and many have clothes washing facilities. save old underwear and socks. you can use them once along the way in remote areas and just throw them away. saves tracking down washing machines.
Not too worried about smelling pretty. We were going to take a Bush shower (do you Yanks have those?) with us for the more remote places and use rest and truck stops for showers. We've also got relatives/friends in areas like LA, Chicago and Florida that we plan on mooching showers from. (Note to Cap: You're my New Mexico Shower :P )

for your best visiting experience, make the trip on motorcycle. a little more expensive than buying a van, but a much more rewarding experience.
We were thinking the van is the best option because it can hold our stuff and it provides accomodation if need be. The downside of a van is that its probably going to be a bit of a gas guzzler.

Do you have LPG powered cars over in America?

whatever you decide on please photo/video the trip. we'd all like to see (and a great way to save the memories)......
We're throwing around the idea of making a documentary, something along the lines of two Aussies terrorising (hmm prolly not the best word ) the States.

Even if we don't we'll still be taking plenty of pictures and video plus if we take the laptop we should have wireless internet in the cities/wherever we can hijack a connection

Land of the giant SUV's, the one where soccer mom jumps in her Avalanche to go get a half gallon of milk 3 blocks away...... besides it would probably cost you a fortune and you would have a lot of trouble finding anywhere to fill up outside of the urban areas. They have them....very few though.
