  1. problem with subtitles for deaf person

I need to copy some TV programs that are on DVD (MASH) so that a
deaf person who can't use a remote can just watch while the episodes
show one after the other. I going to buy the DVD series but the menus are
too difficult for her to navigate. If I convert them to VCD or SVCD by
capturing the DVDs analog while playing the Subtitles will the compression
make them un readable? Sorry if I'm asking you to do my work...

One thread says that if I use DVDshrink, the subtiltes can be retained but I was hoping to get a lot of episodes on one DVD so that she could watch without having to ask a nurse to change the DVD. I bought a Philips DVP642.

Thanks for any advice including to look somewhere else.
    : -)
I'm getting old and this video stuff takes too long.

Done many DVD to "VCD with subs" rips in my days, and even if it was some time ago now, I don't think it was that hard (even if it's much more work than a simple DVD to DVD-R rip). I used DVDx mostly for this, IIRC.
You could also do "real" switchable DVD subs, setting them default to "on", but that would requires some more steps.
So, my suggestion is that you follow any guide on DVD to VCD that suits you best (I recommend DVDx) but stop when you have the VCD mpg. Then author them as separate titles using TMPGEnc DVD Author or DVD-Lab Pro and set them up to play in sequence. You should be able to get about 6-7 hours worth of VCD quality video on a single layer DVD-R
