  1. I've ran across the Samsung SV-5000W at 300 bucks which looks good but can anyone suggest other model numbers, past or present, in a multisystem VCR that will playback on a normal US NTSC TV?

(Most of them need a PAL or multisystem TV).

    Thanks.

What exactly are you wanting to do?

    Samsung SV-5000W Multisystem VCR

Simply put you can now play any VHS or SVHS tape on any TV!

The Samsung SV-5000W four-head hi-fi incorporates a patented, long-life Diamond Head video system for optimum recording and playback. Six-language onscreen programming (English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Italian) simplifies the setup and recording process. The programmable timer lets you record up to six broadcasts over a one-month period. Digital special effects (noiseless still/slow, strobe motion, and image changing) enhance your favorite recorded programs.

This worldwide VCR will play and convert NTSC, PAL, and SECAM tapes on any monitor. The 181-channel MTS tuner also acts as a worldwide TV-signal receiver. Audio dubbing allows you to record audio over existing images, which is handy for layering narration over your video tapes.

Convenient features include V-chip parental control technology, digital auto tracking, a high-speed rewind mechanism, front audio-video jacks, and a six-hour backup if the power goes out. A luminescent, universal remote with jog/shuttle controls is included. Samsung offers a one-year warranty on parts, 90 days on labor.

You might also try Aiwa. Panasonic used to make the W1 but that's a few years old now.

I have a Samsung 5000w it has a converter inside so it can play anything on NTSC TV, no problem. Some multisystem needs a outside converter which probably cost more that the Vcr itself. Aiwa & JVC makes great multisystem unit. Panny used to make it but would be hard to find one.

The SAMSUNG VCR is not very good. Chokes on PAL-I tapes a lot. The conversion quality is fine, but myself a good handful of others I know have, in the end, bought a PAL VCR and then use the SAMSUNG as a converter box, nothing more. The Samsung and a converter box are both around $300, so pick either one. Then get a good PAL VCR.

  6. Samsung is close to the bottom of the barrel on VCRs, hard to find a worse machine.

  7. I had Samsung. Since I believe that neither Panasonoc nor Aiwa makes those multi units anymore, that is only your option (if I am not mistaken) now. And of course... there are just convertors too.
