  1. Can anyone help? I just want to know the quickest and easiest way to get a bunch of files onto a VCD. The files are all different file formats (mpg, avi, rm, wmv etc.). I've never made a VCD before.

I tried Nero but it only recognised a couple of my movies. I tried VCDEasy but that didn't recognise any of them at all!

If my media player can read all the files then surely there must be a similar program that can convert them to VCD instead of playing them?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

  2. TMPGenc will convert some of your file types to VCD MPG-1.

There are various all-in-ones that will cost you such as
    http://www.xilisoft.com/video-converter.html
    http://www.eo-video.com/

    For free:
Avi/Mpeg can be encoded to Vcd as-is by TMPGenc.
Wmv can be converted to Avi for use in TMPGenc

RM to avi for use in TMPGenc

Burn the TMPGenc mpeg1 encoded files with Nero (vcd)

  4. Where to start? Unless your downloaded file is MPEG-1 to start with, you're gunna have to do a conversion. BTW, VCDEasy authors your MPEG so your standalone player can handle it, IF it is capable of playing VCDs.

    Here's some useful stuff:

    1) GSpot, load your file and it will tell you the format, whether you have the codecs to render it, etc.

    2) TMPGEnc encoder. It's trialware, but no time limit on MPEG-1, which is what you need for VCD. (Read the glossary over there <--, it'll help.) You use this to convert to the proper format.

    3) VCDEasy you have for authoring your VCDs. Does Nero do that as well? Never investigated that, although I have Nero.

    4) Look for a guide over there <-- for VCD creation, one that uses TMPGEnc and VCDEasy.

If you're only looking to play the movies on your comp, just burn as data. Just thought I'd throw that in there. Making VCDs isn't tough, have fun and good luck.

P.S. You might look at all-in-one programs in the tool section also.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  5. Thanks for your help, everyone!

I think I'm going to look into an all-in-one solution because I don't really want to spend too long converting files. These VCDs aren't really important to me. It's just a temporary means to let my friends see episodes of a TV show (and the files I downloaded are really, really lousy quality). As soon as the episodes are released on DVD, the CDs will go in the bin!
