Defective media maybe? Or scratched/dirty disc? Try it in a different drive.

  4. as the programs try to read the back-up, they reach certain sectors that they won't read and i keep getting "retry, ignore, abort" options. last program i used was dvd decrypter in iso mode.

i've played this back up in my dvd player without any problems of it getting read.

Sounds like your DVD drive isn't up to the task. Find a different drive to try your disc in.

  6. i've used dvd-r's to make all my back-ups since they're more compatible with more dvd drives than +r's yet i don't understand why some dvd players still act funny with the media. is it the brand of the media or the fact that the media is -r instead of +r

    Hello,

It's hard to know for sure. Sometimes it's bad dye on the disc.... Other times it is a bad burn (bad buffer?).

And also it can be that no matter what you do it will not play a +r disc. You just have to keep doing the trial and error thing.
