  1. I have burned a lot of DVD's using Ritek RiData G04 4X DVD-R, mainly for home movies, picture albums and other stuff. I have probably done about 400 or so burns using this Ritek's media without a problem until now.
I thought at first it was a smudge or a fingerprint, but then realized once I cleaned the surface of the disc, that it was in the media itself. It wasn't there prior to burning the DVD so I can only guess that it was a result from the burning process. Here is an example:

It seems quite trivial with only 3 failed burns in that 400 or so, but I am just curious to what may cause this to happen, and if it is something to keep an eye on.

My epuipment list is as follows (just in case this helps):
Computer is an AMD 64-bit 3200 running XP Pro
Mem is 1GB PC 3200 DDR
    Burner is Optorite 8x DD0401
    Software is TMPGEnc DVD Author
    TMPGEnc video converter
    Canopus Edius 2.0 (DV video)
    PhotoShop Cs (Photo editting)
Macromedia Flash MX (for button animations)

OMG! Those look terrible :P Are you burning at a higher speed than the media is rated? If you are, slow it down. If you're not, buy a different media ....unless you're willing to accept that failure rate.

  3. Man are you sure those are G04? They look a little funky did you run media check on them? Why is the disc have like a millon horizontal scratches on it?

Looks like horrible dye-issues. At least it's easy to know when you have a coaster! Try other media. You may have gotten a super bad batch. Still... I have an Optorite burner too and I have NEVER seen such spots on my DVDs. The worst I had were ones maybe a quarter of that size on Optodisc 4x DVD-Rs.

Also, your DVD looks super-scratched. Did you "clean the surface" with a sock you found on the beach?

  5. Sorry I forgot to mention, the disc exceptionaly clean after burning minus those really dark spots in the media. The millions of tiny scratches came from it sitting on the floor while I was burning the new one, which turned out fine, no problems.

The newer disc was from the same batch, so like I said before, I really can't complain 2 or 3 bad ones out of 400 or so.

    >>>Yes these are Ritek G04's burning at 4X (burner is a 8X)<<< I prefer to burn at the slower speed for realiability sake, when I first started this I had several bad burns at 8X (was using a different type of media then and yes they were rated at 8X) so I slowed the burn speed and had better results.

I apprecite the concerns of my cleaning habits but rest assure this one was trash so when I decided to try to take a picture of it, it was severely scratched, I would never present a disc to a client in that condition, but I have recieved many discs in worst shape.

Thanks again, I appreciate the replies.

  6. By looking at that pic closer I bet someone got their finger prints on the disc. It looks like some sort of finger print prevented the laser or reflecting it on the dye.

  7. Your probably right. I may have in advertently touched the underside of the disc when trying to load it into the tray, who knows. Either way, I am a little more aware of what I can touch and what I can't touch. It is amazing that these discs work as well as they do for as cheap as they are, but I guess most of it comes down to us, the end-user for the final result.

Like all those tiny scratches on the surface, I would be very upset if someone did a project for me (that I paid for) and they handed me a disc that looked like that, but extremely upset if it were un-recoverable media and the disc had problems that could have been avioded.

Again, I appreciate the feed-back that everyone gave me and keep on burning.

  8. hi'
i doubt its a fingerprint that causes that spot, the contrast between the dark spot and the burned area of the dye is far different, usually dye color doesn't change that much when burned, probably it is a bad disk.

    just my 3 cents though.
