As far as ripping a dvd in Linux, I would recommend DVD:Rip, I haven't personally used it but have heard alot of good things about it. You can find it and alot of other free linux software at:
    http://freshmeat.net
Also, do you know how to install from source code? If not let me know and I'll be glad to help.

Depending which distro your using you might not have to compile it. For instance all of these apps are available in rpm form for the Mandrake users. I use vobcopy myself. I use it in my process of going from dvd9 to dvd5.

right. I was just listing the universal option, obviously you could use:
    apt-get
    slack-get
    slapt-get
    swaret
    portage
    ect
to install or just tgz, deb, or rpms.

Yeah, that would make it alot easier. What distro do you use? I currently use a version of Slackware called topologilinux. I've been hearing alot of good things about debian too, what are the main differences between the two, and do you think its work switching?

I've been using Mandrake for years since Ver 6.5. The Main reason is that it is one the easist to install and maintain. I do about 3 install a month for people who are tired of windows and want to try llinux. With Mandrake so windows like it easier for sombody who's not a computer geek to use and maintain. All of the video apps I use like Avidemux, ffmpeg, gv4l, kino, lve, kavtosvcd, all the dvd authoring tools, the list goes on are precompiled for it. Along with all the codecs for xine & mplayer easily available. All I have to do is just install it just like windows but with the stabilty of Linux.

    Do you have some links?
My reason for liking slackware is first that it is free. Second, its the oldest distro and has a big support group. Also its not bogged down by distro-specific stuff IMO.

Thanks alot for the links! I'm not sure if the mandrake packages will work on my slackware install though- I'll look around for some source.
