ok, i made a big boo-boo. i recorded a 12 hour file of DV from within FCP 4.1.
all went well until i went ahead to chop it up into smaller segments for export into an mpeg2 encoder and ultimately onto several dvd's.
after having done this exact thing (except only one hour files instead of 12 hour file) many times i was suprised that FCP will not allow more than 4 hours of video in the timeline. it wouldnt let me place the file in the timeline until i first opened it up in the SLUG and marked an OUT point at 4 hours. then i could work with the first four hours of video.
so my two questions are these:
after i am done with the first four hours of footage, can i remark the in/out points of the single 12 hour file so that i can work with hours 4-8 and then 8-12? or will this screw something up?
also, is there a way i can avoid this problem in the future? does limiting file size in the capture scratch disc dialog create separate files within FCP or is it just separate files on your hard drive that FCP see's as one file?
any help appreciated!

there is no work around, neither in FPC nor in Premiere. I have also many 6 up to 12 hour movies. I cut them up into 4 hour pieces (it used to be 3 hours) and join them in QT pro after editing and exporting. In QT pro there seem sto be no time limitation. Good luck.
