I have a whole spindle of 50 or so CDs with mpeg-1 TV captures from a number of years ago. I now want to put them all on DVDs. My question is can I use them as is (mpeg-1) on a DVD? I read a couple places that mpeg-1 can be played on a progressive player. If this isn't true/accurate/good idea I'd like suggestions on best way to convert for use on DVD

    Thanks

In fact, you're better off not converting the VCD mpegs, since that will only reduce quality. Only diff between a VCD mpeg1 and a valid DVD mpeg1 is the audio sampling rate that has to be 48 kHz for DVD (44.1 for VCD). However, if you're not inclined to do this fq conversion "by hand", at least TMPGEnc DVD Author and DVD-Lab takse care of that for you, if you use a VCD mpeg as source.

    I'm with mats

Drop your VCD MPEGs into TMPGEnc DVD Author (you should be able to put at least 5 or 6 onto 1 disc without any problems) and it will do the audio conversion for you.

The only issue you might hit is invalid GOP structure, which TMPGEnc DVD Author will tell you about when you go to output. TMPGEnc (the encoder)'s templates allow for open GOPs for VCD templates be default so if you have used this to encode the VCDs originally, you might need to fix the GOPs. The best tool for this is womble MPEG-VCR IMO.

... but we'll worry about issues like this when and if they come up ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

Well I tried the DVD Author program and get this:

Error "Can not initialize decoder" displayed.

    The support FAQ says:

"This error message arise when the integrated CRI MPEG decoder meets non standard information from the file data header.
When encontering such an problem, the decoder can not initialize. You may need to re-start the PC, use another source file or re-encode the data.
It is possible DVD-Video created with different authoring software includes in the MPEG some data TMPGEnc DVD Author can not process and therefore can not be guaranted. "

Is this what I should expect if I have an "issue you might hit is invalid GOP structure" as suggested by jimmalenko?

    Also, I HAVE womble's MPEG-VCR.....

    Thanks

I remember getting that error and it was the darndest thing. I can't remember what it was, but I think I rebooted and everything was fine.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I fixed this by downloading TMPGeng MPEG Editor and then I ran the mpeg through it, I selected a start target and pick one frame into it and and then end target and processed it through it, then tried DVD Author and took it. I seem to be getting it on particular long Mpegs from the same source that DVD Author wouldn't have any trouble with if it was just 1.6GB instead of 3GB.

  8. Hi,

I have the same problem : "Could not initialize decoder" while using TMPenc DVD Author tool to read a VOB file. The VOB file was read using DVD Decrypter. I thought the VOB file should have correct format.

Since my original DVD disc is damaged, DVD Decrypter can't read all VOB files. Thus I don't have a proper IFO file to use for backup. I'm trying to recover as much VOB files as possible, then use TMPenc DVD author to copy them to a DVD disc. Does anyone have any idea how to do it?

    Thank you,
    Jean
