  1. Hello, I have some clips which total 12gb but all software i've used so far will stop authoring around 8.38gb. I've tried ulead dvd author, dvd lab & tmpgenc dvd author. I'm aware that 12gb is too much but i plan on using / test dvdshrink, so any program that will allow me to author more than 8.5gb ?

    Thanks.

Have you tried clicking 'Ignore' on TMPGEnc DVD Author when it tells you the disk is too big? I'm using version 1.6 and it will author over 12 gb.

Not so long ago (Before DL burners and media were readily available) people would intentionally author 4.7GB+ and then expect DVDShrink to work it's magic to fit it onto one disc. Now we're talking 12GB ? Good lord
    If in doubt, Google it.

encode at lower bitrates or split the content over 2 discs!

    Problem solved!
Sorry, I had to go see about a girl

I agree with midnightsun. But if you just have to put all 12 gb on 1 disk then try doing 6 gb at a time. After you created 2-6 gb DVD files use DVD Shrink to shrink them, then import the shrunk files back into DVD Author to combine them and make a menu if you want one.

Why do you need to try to squeeze so much on one disk?

  8. I have yet to find/hear of any DVD authoring SW that will allow you to create a set of Vobs more than about 8.5Gb in size. Why not I hear you ask (go then ask!). The reason is the simple fact that you cannot (currently) fit more than 8.5Gb on to a single Sided disk. Sure you can fit twice as much on a double sided disk but the 2 sides have to be authored seperatley!

If you really must put your 12Gb of mpeg files on to one 4.35Gb single sided single layer DVDr (or even Dual LAyer), re-encode them at the correct bitrates using a proper encoder rather than doing what you are trying to do. Believe me when I say that 12Gb transcoded (shrunk) down to 4.35 Gb will look pretty damn awful, certainly much worse than if you encoded it properly.

Authoring oversize and then shrinking is a good method if you are just a little over (say up to a Gig or so due to a fualty bitrate calculation) but much beyond that the quality loss is going to be dramatic.

For what it's worth - yesterday I authored a DVD with a total of 6 different tracks and 9.7 GB with TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 without any kind of problem. Got the usual warnings - ignored - authorized and run it through DVDShrink doing deep scan. Worked like a charm all the way.

I have the latest update version of DVDAuthor - maybe that helps ??
