i was wondering if anyone knew of a program that can monitor the data rates of firewire and/or usb ports. ive tried looking but i cant find any. i have a hard drive and dvd burner connected to the firewire port on my computer, and i was curious how fast the data is actaully being transfered. anyone know of a program like this?

That'd be kinda cool. When I worked for a RS-232 peripheral mfg (digitizers) I had a few DOS utils that would monitor RS-232 communications. would be nice to see a Windows based USB / Fwire utility.

On my WIndows XP rig, my fire wire port is seen by windows as a networking device, though never used as such it shows in the 'networking' tab of task manager as 400Mbps network bridge (or something like that). If your set up is similiar it may show data transfer speed when the firewire is in use. Take a look.

another reason i wanted a program like this is because i already have a dvd burner and a hdd on the same firewire port. i was considering adding a second hdd to the same port, but i wasnt sure how much of the 400mbps my current hdd and burner are taking up. i only have one firewire port on my laptop, so the only other option would be to get a firewire card adapter

DOn't know of any such program. but if you can find a program to bench a hard drive run it once connected to the firewire and again on USB and compare.

I don't think the Firewire transfer rate will show up in networking unless you are using Firewire for networking in place of a Ethernet connection.
You can use SiSandra to benchmark your drives, though. There is a free copy at www.overclockersclub.com. Sorry, I can't get through to their site for the exact link.
I used it in my laptop to check a Firewire PCMCIA card against a USB 2.0 card, using the same external HD.
I got 12MBS for Firewire and 801KBS for USB 2.0. Firewire was about 15 times faster. The actual numbers don't mean much as this was not really a calibrated test. (Your numbers are bound to vary from mine.) You can check the transfer rate of just about any drive with this program. -
Firewire will ALSO show up as a network port. But it should also be listed as actual ports if installed and working properly.

This is the closest I've seen to a firewire speed monitor in XP:
