    Hello,

Now they're panning the ALEXANDER movie that's just about to come out.

Do you rely on movie critics to decide which movie to see?????

I don't. ESPECIALLY IF ITS SCIFI!

Movie critics pan almost every scifi movie that comes out. And they trash Star Wars and Star Trek all the time. I go to whatever I think looks like it'll be worthwhile. How about you?

I don't watch movies in theaters (much).

That said, I really like reading reviews of things, movies included. If a movie gets a very bad review, it will probably scare me away from watching the DVD. This is especially true for comedies that are reviewed as "not funny".

I usually wait for the dvd and view it for the first time in the comfort of my own home.

  4. Theaters are to expensive. Plus, everyone hates a screeming 8 month old baby next to them.

I wait for them to come out on DVD, and by then everyone I know will tell me if they liked it or not

That's because those movies suck!!!! :D

It's become very apparent to me that movie critics almost have to hate movies. Take Christopher Null over at moviecritic.com for example. That dude pans just about every movie that comes out. Even the ones that get a decent review still has some left-handed comment in about the cinematography or some other bullshit I could care less about. What ever happened to going to the movies just to be entertained? Why does everything have to be such a spiritual journey? I totally agree that a movie is much better when it has an underlying message, or uses alot of ambiguous symbolism to further it's point/plot, but not every movie is going to have some huge psychological impact.

Take a movie like "Under Siege" for example. There is no hidden message in this movies, no symbolism, nothing really new, and the acting is almost sub-par... but it's entertaining. Yet, it was totally panned by critics.

    Don't believe a critic.

    Ask a friend.

No, but I like to wait for the dvd.

  9. I used to watch Siskel & Ebert from 1979 almost up 'til around the time Gene Siskel died...but they never had any affect on what movies I went to see.

I get a kick out of reviews sometimes...but I disagree with some of 'em.

These days, I'll wait for the DVD...and I tend to read the reviews after I've seen the movie.
But if a friend raves about something, I'll most likely check it out.

Stuff that gets nominated for awards doesn't make me want to see anything more than if it hadn't gotten nominated...and awards don't mean much anyway (that's the politics of the commerical film industry - it's about money not art)

If you're interested in Alexander, I recommend the documentary, Beyond The Movie Alexander The Great, already available on DVD...along with Beyond The Movie Troy.

    Hello,

If it's an average action flick I'll wait for the dvd and MAYBE rent it. If it's got people in it I like I'd most likely see it.

Then again last winter the hockey movie "MIRACLE" came out and I wanted to go see it. I never got around to it. But I STILL haven't checked out the dvd.... I got to do that sometime

Never. Too many of them are in love with artsy-fartsy movies with subtitles, and they poo-poo action movies, which I like.

There was only critic I liked, years ago, for the Chicago Daily News. I forget his name. He would review movies for the newspaper's TV guide. One movie was about the life of Che Guevera, and his one-word comment was "revolting"

    Hello,

Yeah all the ones that win the awards I would NEVER see.... Except Lord of the Rings of course

And suprisingly that Master and Commander won an award and it looks like a decent action flick

It got an award and I did not like it, perfect example of why I don't use reviews to decide what to see.

Yea, I know what you mean glockjs, it is like there is some outline that a movie must follow and if it does not follow that outline, it gets a bad review.

I stopped watchin' them by that time...but Siskel & Ebert were entertaining to watch when they didn't agree about a review.
They'd get into these heated arguments and you were just waiting for one to slug the other

SNL used to do parodies of them - killing each other or reviewing gay male porn

And In Living Color had their '2 snaps up' critics 8)

Before Keenen Ivory Wayans did In Living Color, he wrote the screenplay for Hollywood Shuffle (check it out if you haven't seen it) - there's a parody of Siskel & Ebert in that as well...with black critics reviewing movies...instead of the 2 thumbs up or down, they'd give a movie "The Finger" if it sucked

This is how it usually goes with me: I call a friend or a friend calls me and we go to the thatre, then when were there we decide what to see when were there. I never pay attention to movie critics. Just because they say something sucks doesn't mean i'll think it sucks.

If anything, if Ebert hates the movie than I will probably like it. Movie critics tesnt to really really hate the type of movies I like the best, those being tasteless, juvenile, vulgar, or violent. You won't find mainstream critics recommending movies like Team America, or Death Wish 3.

It's pretty good, by all means rent it. Then again, I suspect you don't share the same tastes as me. Similarly with movie reviews. Like I care what some ******* reviewer thinks.

Oh yeah, don't go to theaters much, I wait for the DVD. Usually not in a hurry to see any particular movie.

    Nevertheless, I voted TGPO option.

    I voted a resounding NO.
    Everything critics hated....I loved.....well almost.
It started with Airplane ....critics hated that movie.
They also hated A Christmas Story. Remember Rex Reid? He was an idiot in the first degree. If he said it sucked....it was great.

I'm in agreeance with all the "no"'s on this board. I'll take my friend's opinions that know what I like, however. But from some random person, no.

And I like seeing movies in the theatres. I just like the huge screen, the atmosphere (go late enough and no crying babies) and the sound systems. Until I have a place like in MTV Cribs, I'll never get it to sound like that.

I sometimes read them, but that is after I have seen the movie. Critics hate action or comedic movies. I tend to like them, sometimes. I usually go see a movie based on the promotion it gets. If its crammed down my throat (xXx, Taxi, Torque, 2 Fast 2 Furious) I will refuse to see it.

    Hello,

    Hmm....

You know I actually kinda liked xXx. I didn't see it in the theater but it was one of those that I ended up renting on dvd.

Vin Disel isn't too bad of an actor. I liked that it was a hard rock/punk rip on James Bond.

The action was pretty decent. Are they making a sequel?

I may go into a little rant here, so may want to skip.

Speaking of the atmosphere, I'm starting to hate going to the movies. Is it me or are people getting more and more obnoxious? Maybe I'm turning into a grumpy old man in my early 20s. I hate people who constantly make comments throughout the whole movie. You know these guys, the big movie "experts". Or how about people who get calls, answer it, then start talking right there?!
I usually look up a movie and check what time it starts. I go down and have a nice meal at a restaurant (Big meal and $10 cheaper than if I have some popcorn and small soda at the theater). Then go to the theater and get my seat. I usually get there about a half hour before it starts. Relax a while and then it starts. Then the people start walking in! Up until 15 mintues into the movie people keep coming in and having me have to move or wait until they sit down and stop blocking my view of the screen!
I love weekdays I have no classes. I get to go in there and theres almost no one there.

Am I the oddball here or do some of you feel the same way?
