  1. What is the difference between the blank dvd-9 DL discs the public can buy and the discs used my movie manufacturing companies, FOX HOME VIDEO, etc.

I was researching compatibility of dvd-9 DL sicks w/ players on this site and seriously like maybe 12 decks <including ps2, xbox> came up. But the dvd-9's hollywood uses plays fine on virtually any deck. Now I could understand if maybe hollywood companies had some special format, but I'm encountering dvd-9's in dvd's I'm getting from asia, that play fine too.

Do the dvd-9 dual layer discs actually play in most discs, or is there 2 types of dual layers disc <I don't mean +/- R> what the professional movie people use and we can get?

    Hello,

The difference is the burned discs are of a different material than the professional discs. The professional discs are made in a factory to exacting specs using material that will read in EVERY dvd player.

Home burners wheter dual or single layer all use a different dye so that we can record them. That means they won't work in EVERY single player the same as the professional discs. There are different variables in production of recordable discs than the professional discs. That's the way it is and will be for the forseeable future.

  3. Mass produced commercial releases are pressed with pits in the disk surface representing the data. Home burnt disk use a dye based process to change the reflectivity of parts of the disk to represent the data.

    Different process, different results.

    Hello,

Well it probably comes with a stiff royalty that would keep the little guys out from mass producing perfect dvds at home

The pressing plants usually work on a contract basis. Runs of only a thousand disks are not uncommon, some probably happily do even smaller runs. It is not unknown for the big commercial DVD pirateing operation to buy up old pressing equipment and put it into service pressing pirate disks. This certainly has been the case for CD's and is probably still true for DVD's.
