  1. SVCD to DivX
    or any other suggestable solution
    without compromising colors

I have two english language SVCD files
I can see them correctly in PowerDVD

    I have several subtitles files
most of them in .srt format

I've seen there's the possibility to convert
the .srt files in vobsub format
but this transforms subtitles in bitmap images
This is probably good if you play the file
from a hardware player and you'd like to
    change between different subtitles...
but if you play the file on a pc and you'd
like the files to fit on CDs i think (correct
me if i'm wrong) that's not the way to go...

Thought about converting SVCD in DIvX
    https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm
but, as is pointed out in this page
    and in another forum message,
    that creates colorspace problems
if you do it in virtualdub...
    > If your source is MPEG2(SVCD or DVD MPG files)
    > or VOB you must use the Virtualdub-MPEG2.
    > It's suggested to use fast recompress mode
    > for video to avoid a useless double conversion
    > between color spaces... RGB to YUV to RGB again
    > BUT, it's also pointed out that if you are converting
    > from SVCD you MUST use full processing mode
    > because to resize video you have to use
    > virtualdub filters ...and they work only adopting
    > full processing mode

    so
if you are converting from SVCD
    you must resize
    so
you must pass through double useless color conversion
    and you lose color details...

    Now
    these are video files
about art history and i have to use them
    in a university course
(I'm not the professor but she asked me if
    i could bring the files...)
I have to find a way to convert SVCD to DivX
    possibly without losing color details...

Have tried not to do the resize thing
    with virtualdub filters
but trying to serve a file with avisynth.
Virtual dub opens the file and i can
navigate through it but when i try
divx conversion there are always errors
    most frequent:
    "Cannot start video compression
The source image format is not acceptable
    (error code -2)"

    what does this mean?

I've tried a lot of things
    After two days...
    virtualdub-MPEG2 doesn't complain
and starts saving the avi/divx file
    only if i ask a
    video fastrecompress,
    compression > divX > 1-pass
BUT with the fastrecompress i cannot
    trigger the resize filter...

Isn't "the source image format" the same?
indipendent from what i'm asking virtualdub to do?
Isn't "the source image format" the same indipendently
from working in fastrecompress or full processing modes
Isn't "the source image format" the same indipendently
from asking virtualdub to filter at some point of the chain
or to touch the stream only for the compression?
    Am i missing something?

    Any help appreciated!

    dee
