    Hello-
I am looking for the best *free* way to compress my video captures from Giga Pocket. Unfortunately recording around 5 minutes at standard quality will produce a MPEG2 file about 160,000 kb. I am probably missing obvious tools on this site, but if somebody could steer me to a good reliable way I would appreciate it! thanks

Yes ok I looked there, but its pretty slim pickings for any help on converting SVCD to avi. The 2 guides that came up are slightly confusing and my end results are not good (Audio does not play correctly) That's why I am asking if anybody has a good PROVEN way to do this which doesn't require a degree from CalTech to figure out. Thanks.

  4. Ok, so now I know that your source is SVCD and you want to convert to a smaller avi. You say the guides you tried to follow (like [urlhttp://www.doom9.org/index.html?/svcd2divx.htm] this [/url] one perhaps) were too complicated or didn't quite work as expected. Thats a real shame.

Perhaps if you supplied a few more details about what you did and where it went wrong, someone may be able to help.

Converting svcd to avi is not that easy. You can try Dr. DivX or Vidomi if you want something easy. Be sure to resize the video to a 4:3 resolution(like 640x480 or 320x240) and then crop if any black borders.

If you can't open/import the svcd mpg rip the svcd mpg to your hd with isobuster, check this guide https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=97#97 .

thanks for your replies. I tried using this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm of which I have had marginal success. GigaPocket records in Mpeg2 (which I am assuming, hopefully not mistakingly, is the same as SVCD) so I used the proper tools (VirtualDub MPEG2) used Divx codec 4.12 (like in the tutorial), however here at this point in the tutorial it states to use a Divx calculator but use the default settings? Here I simply leave the settings in Vdub as they are, and when converting to .avi I recieve a smaller output file (trimming down 621 MB to around 170MB) that retains pretty good video quality. The problem is with the audio, I cannot find the correct setting to use. As in the tutorial I use the LameMP3 encoder (ACM). Here the tutorial is confusing again as it states to change the audio bitrate to synch up with what you used to calculate the bitrate(?) which they don't really explain in this tutorial. So since I don't understand that process I have basically been using the trial/error method trying to find the proper audio compression rate, and after trying several settings (128kbps, 130, 136, 192, 320) I have the same audio problem: There is a distinct almost breaking glass-like sound in the audio track. I am going to continue experimenting with the different audio compression levels (within the LameMP3 setting) but I am not holding out much hope. Perhaps its because I don't understand the Bitrate calculator? Any thoughts greatly appreciated, thank you.

Dr. Divx does the job really well. Quick and easy. Thanks for the suggestion.
