Hi all
i am in the process of upgrading my system. i was origianlly going to go for a P4 2.8, however i have notice there are the Sempron chips from AMD. i was looking at the Sempron 3100+ chip. can anyone give me information on this chip. i mainly use my computer for general stuff, playing a few games, internet stuff. i am also lookign at doing a bit of video editing as well. would this be a good idea for someone who is on a budget?

The sempron is a scaled down version of the athlon 64.
It is the competitor to Intel's celeron processor.
If you are looking for a value processor, you can't go wrong, but don't expect it to be a screamer at video editing.
It is a good all around low end processor that took the Duron's place. -
The Sempron did not replace the Duron, it replaced the Thoroughbred-core Athlon. The Semprons are Thoroughbred-core Athlons. The Barton cores have sadly been scrapped - they closed the performance gap too much between the Sempron and the A64.
The Sempron 3100+ will be a very quick 32-bit CPU, and should hammer through video encoding with ease. I've used a Sempron 2600+ before, and that was fairly quick too.

Techware Labs has just completed an article on AMD's Socket A Sempron 2800+ and the Socket 754 Sempron 3100+. Here is a clip:
AMD has just released its latest processor line, the AMD Sempron. The Sempron is designed to replace the Duron line of lower-performance, inexpensive processors aimed at home and business desktop users. Available in both Socket A and Socket 754, the Sempron offers good performance for its price, and has good potential for overclocking. -
Bazooka,
This wouldn't be much of a forum if everyone agreed blindly!
Having done more research, I can see that we're both right. The Sempron is a Duron replacement, but is also has features found in the Thoroughbred Athlons and not in the Durons, a good example being 256KB L2 cache (Durons had 64KB). I did see on the AMD website that some Semprons have "up to 512KB L2 cache" but I can't find any. Those would be the equivelant to the Barton, then.
So what are the Semprons missing that the Athlon XPs had? I can't see what is different (aside from the cache), so it is fair to say that the Semprons also replaced the Athlon XP.

Fairly off topic, but I was just reading the review of the latest P4 and it still gets handidly beaten down by AMD. I used to be a hardcore proponent of Intel, especially after the farcical K6-2 POS that I actually got suckered into buying, but in recent times AMD really is the cat's meow. My barton 2500+ I bought in March has been nothing but great

i guess they're sayin it replaced the duron just because that's their cheapest chip. doesnt mean that it's really any worse than an xp. it's all name branding is all.
in my opinion if you were to spend that much more for a chip (tigerdirect shows 119 bucks, newegg doesnt have) i would spend the 30 extra for this
