Editing causing out of sync problems.

When I capture DV, the file is not out of sync. But if I cut or edit it, it becomes out of sync.

The same is true of mpeg. If I convert the DV file directly to mpeg with TMPGenc. I have no problems. But if I cut or edit the mpeg, it becomes out of sync.

Any ideas on what causes this? And how do I fix it?

I do not know for sure why editing mpeg files can result in audio sync issues but it does. It is for this reason that I do all of my editing when the file is still an avi. Sometimes I will use CCE Basic to convert my avi to mpeg compliant files but I only convert what I know I will not be editing later when I go to author it. I usually use Ulead Video Studio 8 to edit my avi and then to do the authoring.

CCE Basic allows you choose what portion of an avi file you want to encode to mpeg.

mpeg-2 I can understand, especially if it is edited by software not really tuned to mpeg-2. DV getting out of sync seems to indicate bigger problems. What do you use to edit and encode ?

I have used Ulead VideoStudio in the past. But perhaps that I was cutting Mpeg and not DV. I will have to try it again.

I was also told to frameserve my DV to TMPGEnc to avoid having issues when encoding edited DV with TMPGEnc. I have yet to try this. Thanks for your answers.

I edit my DV in virtualdubmod and then frameserve via AVISynth to TMPGEnc. For more info, try FulciLives' excellent guide.

VirtualDub experimental version 1.6.0 and 1.6.1 is able load the audio and video of DV type 1.

I have tried to cut certain parts of a small (type 1) DV file using "direct stream copy" in Vdub 1.6.1 experimental. It seems to be working OK. I will try it on a larger file.

I am not an expert in vdub but I am assuming that the "direct stream copy" ensures that the DV file isn't being re-encoded when the only thing that I am doing is cutting out stuff.

Essentially, I believe that this means that I can cut parts of the DV type 1 file in vdub experimental 1.6.1 without converting the output to type 2 DV as long as I don't do any editing other than cutting out some stuff. In other words, cutting out parts of the type 1 DV file in "direct stream copy" mode will leave the outputed DV as type 1. If this is the case, I might start to do my editing in vdub experimental 1.6.1. This might solve my out of sync editing problem.

Editing mpeg-2 with VideoRedo appears to have solved my audio sync problem as far as mpeg is concerned. Videoredo has a built-in sync feature that will correct for errors (for example, dropped frames) to make the edited mpeg in sync.
