What kind of DVD are you trying to burn? Data backup? DVD Video? What? Sonic isn't what you want for data and AVI is not in the DVD Video specification and must be converted. Your files are likely highly compressed Divx/Xvid/MPEG4 encoded AVIs of one flavor or another and they balloon in size when decompressed to MPEG2, especially if your Sonic program is using PCM audio by default as the older versions did.

Sonic MyDVD serves a useful purpose for noobs just starting out, but you'll soon be itching to take the training wheels off and try out better software once you start to understand this stuff.

Ton of guides and info to the left there. Make use of the search feature, also. It is your best friend here. Trust me on this.

How much you can fit on a DVDr is determined by runtime and bitrate of your videos. TMPGEnc is a popular program for converting the type of files you have. It comes with a bunch of pre-configured templates you can use to make things easier for you while you're learning. You'll have to convert them and then author them to a title set, then burn them to DVDr.

These are the specs you're shooting for to make your files into DVD compliant streams. This is found all the way at the top to the left, clicking on DVD under the "What is" heading for future reference.

Use the search to find guides on converting.
