Help me choose - Philips DVP642 or RJTech 800DVX?

I am looking for an affordable DVD/DivX/XVid/mp3/VCD player.

I have come across these two:

I just cannot make up my mind about which one. The biggest difference I see is that RJTehc plays DVD+R and also supports GMC and QPEL which Philips doesn't.

I personally like Philips brand better and some have said it has better picture quality (not sure) I dont know if GMC or QPEL are important for DivX movies or not?

Please help me choose between the two, I have searched quite a bit but haven't found a definate answer. Would I be happy with the Philips, is there any known issue with it?

If you're making your own Divx/Xvid files GMC and QPEL aren't important -- just don't use those features when you encode. If you're downloading videos you may find some files that won't play on the Philips because of them.

I don't know anything about the RJTech aside from what I read at the link you gave. But it looks like it officially supports more subtitle formats, is multiregion, and converts PAL to NTSC right out of the box. It sounds pretty good. I'd like to see if anyone who has one replies!

One problem I had with the Philips (only had it for a week before giving it away earlier this year) was that it didn't have independent X and Y scaling. It would sometime pick the wrong aspect ratio for an AVI and there was no way to manually adjust it. I don't know if this has changed with more recent firmware updates.

The Philips was also picky about disks not being finalized. I had a few disks that were only half full and not finalized so I could add more files later. The Philips wouldn't read them.

Thanks... I also dont know much about RJTech... a little cautious about the brand... I looked at their website and my personal website looks better! So, wasn't too sure if they're a good company. But, from the reviews over there it seems people like the player...

Anyone uses RJTech? Need feedback please!

I have a RJTech RJ-1500DVXII and a love it. It plays the majority of the DivX files I've downloaded and everything I create with Dr. DivX and FairUse Wizard. I have to admit that I got this model for its Karaoke functions and CD+G support in addition to DivX.
I got this player from Newegg for the lowest price I could fine at the time here in the States. The RJ800DVX wasn't listed then, now they have it too for $75 US.
This player (1500DVXII) does everything RJTech claimed it would. DivX plays great. I've burned seven 2+ hour movies onto one DVD-R and it plays without a hitch. From what I've read, the RJ800DVX should do an even better job, especially for downloaded DivX.
The progressive scan video quality is quite good, epecially for DVDs.
If I was more into DivX than karaoke, I would have got the RJ800DVX if I had known about it then for sure.
Do a google search for a player: CAVS 103G It is a karaoke/DivX player that plays Super CD+G discs. Notice it looks VERY similar to the RJ800DVX. Just FYI.

alexb76, sorry I didn't mention that I haven't owned a Phillips. I'd have to say no I don't like RJTech better than Philips. If Philips had a karaoke/DivX player for the same or lower price than the RJTech and had all of the same features, I would have tried the Philips first. I'm more into features and value than name brands though.

From what i understand the 642 is crap. and so is the Rj800 and the RJTech RJ-1500DVXII is the best. Thats from 1 user on here. I wanted to get an overall poll of everything so far. its 2 ppl saying that RJTech RJ-1500DVXII is good.

I love the 642 have two, will buy another one next week or i might buy one that suports GMC and QPEL ,but this isnt a big deal to me anyway. Dont know where you are going to buy the Player but the links you have there are high, I got one at sears for 60.99 , plus buying from there, if i didnt like it, I can return it,No shipping..

It's fine for being able to watch what ever disk you put in but not as your main DVD player. When compared to my Sony, the 642 has less than good picture quality. I would rate my sony as almost great picture quality. But then mt sony won't play eveything so it's a trade off.

Yes you are right i do see a tinny diff in quality,I really only play files that, i dont want to spend hours encoding.

Since I started this thread, I have bought the Philips. I got to see RJTEch in person and it WAS CRAP, it looked sooooo cheap that you really didn't wanna put it on ur rack of equipment. Didn't test the pic quality or other stuff, but on ncix forum people reported better picture quality on Philips, but more features with RJTech.

I am very very happy with Philips. Have had a few issues at the begining which was mainly due to bad DVD burns and when I fixed my burner and upgraded firmwares, everything's great. Make sure you check ur burns with DVDinfo to see if there's any errors on it.

The player plays everything, CD, CD-R, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and I have tried ALL of those with no issues. All my older or newer DivX and mpeg files play, all my XviD play, all my mp3s play, etc... I heard that last firmware supports GMC, but no QPL... not sure though.

The fit and finish of Philips was MILES AHEAD of RJTech and that's important to me, so I picked it.

I also have a 642 and just recently got some PAL DVDs and it plays them too (on my NTSC telly).

i'm still leaning towards RJ but not the 800's more of the Rj1500-II because there hasn't been a serious bad review over all on this forum. like the reviews on this are like 38 postives and like 2 negatives or something. Only real big issue would be the cd.tray feeling cheap. As for looks, It doesn't really matter to me. Cheap looking or not. whos going to look at your dvd player ? cheaply made or what not, just means you gotta baby it a little. The philips i might try because its like at my local stores and i can return it if it seems like crap.

Well, I haven't seen 1500 in person, but it must be better than 800. I also dont care about looks that much, but when a player is made SO CHEAPLY on the outside, it shows me something about what's inside. Like the quality of the connectors, the a/d converters, etc... I would definately get Philips over RJTech800 but probably 1500 would be better than Philips, ofcourse it's more expensive.

yea i dunno. i never seen the 1500 in person. but online its about 95$ shiped. where as the 800 is 80$ shiped. and the phlips is 70$ locally tax and everything.

I know what your going at. I would agree too. I mean if its cheaply design then maybe the internals are cheaply put together as well.
