Just bought a pack of 5 Memorex DVD-RWs. I attempted to format 4 of the in my Toshiba stand alone DVD recorder. How I got a error message DVD could not be formated with all 4.
I then placed a few of these DVD-RWs into both of my computers. One has a LG burner the other a Pioneer A05 burner. Using Nero I was not able to quick or full erase the media. I got an error message the Disc is not a rewritable.
I then used DVDInfo to erase. Tried fast, quick and full erase and I get an error message media is not ready.
Here is the info from DVDInfo.

I downloaded the newer version of DVDInfoPro with adverts and it will completely erase and/or full format these Memorex DVD-Rws (2x) on my newer LG burner but my Pioneer A05 burner reports media not ready. My Toshiba DVD recorder will re-format these discs halway through, then give me an error that the discs can't be formated.
After reformating they still will not format in my Pioneer A05 or my Toshiba.
These Memorex DVD-Rws are made by CMC. Older Memorex DVD-Rws (1x & 2x)work flawlessly in both burners and the Toshiba recorder. The same with Maxell, Verbatim and Pioneer DVD-Rws, they all work fine.... -
Even if you could format them, they are not good for much. I have never been able to get a movie to play on these without freezes. I just hope that some of my data disks holdup.

I have only used memorex, but I suspect there are many of the early rws that are problematic. I suspect the 7.82 gig is an error. I don't think they have made any DL RWs, yet.

Well another issue is what I got caught with just this week, I purchased a pack of TDK RW discs and my Pioneer A05 wouldn't recognise them ("Disk not ready" message).
On further reading I found that the A05 only supports Version 1.1 RW disks. The new disks were version 1.2. I checked on the Pioneer site and the latest firmware upgrade will only support version 2.0 disks - so these are completely unusable in the Pioneer.
You may be facing the same issue. (Note: the version number is printed somewhere on the RW disk). -
My older Memoriex are marked as version 1.1. However the newer Memorex do not ahve a version number.
What is the difference between the versions ? -
Haven't been able to find out for sure.
I also found this on the Pioneer web site ...
IMPORTANT: Regarding 4X DVD-RW Media
4X speed DVD-RW media is based on the new book standard DVD-RW Version 1.2 (which supports 2X and 4X speed writing/recording). DVD writers must comply with this standard to write/record with this media.
Pioneer models DVR-A07U, DVR-A07XLA, DVR-107KLB, DVR-107 all support 4X-speed DVD-RW media with 2X and 4X-speed writing/recording respectively.
Previous Pioneer models DVR-A03, DVR-A04, DVR-104, DVR-A05, DVR-105, DVR-SK12D, DVR-A06, DVR-106, DVR-S606 are unable to write/re-write/record/re-record using 4X-speed DVD-RW media (Version 1.2 2X and 4X-speed writing/recording media). It is not possible to update these models with new firmware to enable them to write to this 4X DVD-RW media. -
Thanks all for the replies. The Memorex -RWs are labeled 1x-2x. No mention of 4x.
