my Pioneer drive is working after - and I hate to say that - having it flashed on a PeeCee!!!
My Mac recognizes it with the latest firmware version I flashed it on Wintel (1.21).
And suddenly it also does not take ages to burn a DVD, but just the estimated time, depending on media.
I guess that's the happy ending of this thread - thanks for all your help, guys!

Well, you certainly have a reason to be Thankful this day
I had a feeling the Firmware thing could be solved on a PC. However, I though it would involve a DOS boot disc, an internal ATA connection, and complicated ancient incantations. Given that prospect, I would have just returned it
Glad to hear it was solved much easier. Interesting that it now works fine on your Mac
