JVC DR-M10 Noticeable Noise

I just purchased the DR-M10 from B&H Photo Video. This unit was manufactured in China, June 2004. The unit can play and record fine.

I notice that is an annoying noise in the unit similar to a loud hard drive sound. This noise never goes away until you turn off the unit. I am not sure if it is normal or an indication of some problem.

Please let me know if you are experiencing the same.

It's probably the exhaust fan, kinda noisy on the JVC, can't hear it on the Panasonic.

I can hear the fan all the way across the room when it's quiet, could on the last one too, it was even louder than the one I've got now.

I called JVC technical support today about this annoying noise. They told me that is coming from the hard drive and it is normal.

I mentioned that I was not aware that the DR-M10 had a hard drive. They said it is where all the page setup, settings are stored. I was thinking that all the JVC settings are stored in a chip and not HD.

Can anyone confirm this?

There is no hard drive, it's the fan.

I was hearing some strange noises during the night recently and realized that I had left a disc in the machine after recording. Even with it turned off and in power save mode the JVC was still spinning the disc up every once in a while for some reason. Strange.

The fan in my JVC is pretty quiet, certainly does not sound like a hard drive. My JVC was made in Japan in May 2004 if that matters.

Mine was made in Japan as well around Feb I think (I bought it in April/May)

I wonder if its a production change when it got made in China, I never have had that problem, you might want to try installing a fan or something in your cabinet if thats where it is or taking a can of compressed air and blowing into the fan, maybe something is stuck in it

I feel your pain. My recorder made the same annoying hard drive sound.
My solution was to replace the fan motor. You can order the part from JVC, part no. QAR0310-001.

Thank you for letting us know that you had to replace the fan motor to fix the annoying noise. I am wondering if JVC replaced under warranty or if you had to pay $48.69

I didn’t have the time to send the machine to JVC for repair so I opted to purchase a new fan and install it myself. One thing I did do before making the purchase was to run the machine for a few seconds with the fan unplugged to verify the problem. You may want to try this before spending $50 on a new fan. Better yet send it in under warranty.

My DR-M10 was made in Japan, July 2004.

Be sure to match specs, power, cables, everything .... else you could blow up the unit.

To make your search a little easier the DR-M10 uses an NMB model 2406ML-04W-B20, 12v DC 0.072A Brushless fan motor. It also has what appears to be a non-standard type-3 connector (very small).
