  1. I have been authoring dvd's for a while now using divx and xvid files. I extract the audio as wave and then convert to AC-3 (2.0) using Besweet. I was wondering if there was any way to convert this audio into 5.1 audio and if such programs like TmpGenc DVD Author would even take such audio. Thanks in advance for any help that may be offered.

    Hello,

TDA will accept it but you won't be able to edit the audio.

I believe others like dvdlab or dvdremake have 5.1 support.

Check out the dvd authoring programs listed in the tools section on this site.

for stereo->5.1 methods check out the audio forum at doom9.org. There are quite a few explained in detail. Not sure if Tmpegenc will accept 5.1 audio. I'm afraid not though.

    Dvd-lab pro should though.
Sorry, I had to go see about a girl

There are ways of converting stereo into 5.1 and there are plenty of authoring proggys that will accept it. But is it worth it?
With a lot of effort you can maybe get something that crudley simulates 5.1 surround sound, but it won't be the real thing. With a simple conversion all you will do is waste a load of bitrate.

Good point. I was waiting for someone to say something like that and confirm it so that I wouldn't waste my time. Its always a temptation of mine when working on a project to do too much, way beyond necessity. Thank you all for your suggestions and advice.

If your audio source is a 2 channel movie, then the effort will be huge, and only worth it if you want to showcase your audio mixing talents.

Having said that, it can be fun to try to create a 5.1 mix for a short clip, simply for the experience.

In answer to some earlier guessing, both versions of DVD Lab will accept AC-3 5.1 The Pro version will allow you to add multiple audio tracks.

TDA will happily accept 5.1 chanel AC3 audio (i dont even have the Ac3 plugin for TDA).

The only problem I get with TDA and AC3 (wether 2 or 6 chanel) is you do not hear the audio on preview (does the plugin allow you to hear the preview?..anyone).
