My problem is that the VCD (and SVCD's) that I am burning with Nero are not working in my DVD player. I used to burn VCDs and play them in DVD and had no problem. I upgraded from version 5.5 to version 6 (actually 6.6 since I did the full upgrade after installing version 6) but the VCDs I burn now do not play in the same DVD player that used to work fine. I tried burning things has a SVCD but those do not work either. I tried them on another DVD player I have that also used to play VCDs without trouble but they would not play. I am using the same CD-ROM burner.
I have tried burning with and without menus. Neither worked. They appear to work okay when I use the DVD player in my computer but will not play on my Apex DVD player (let me stress again that it has never had a problem playing a VCD in the past). I have tried a couple of different brands of CD-ROMs. None play. I have tried just burning the file onto the CD-Rom as an MPEG and that does not work. Obviously (but to avoid any smart remarks), I also tried the conversion program in Nero that makes it VCD (or SVCD) and not just a disk with an MPEG.
I have written to Nero but gotten no response. I cannot find anything relevant on their website/FAQ nor can I find the same problem elsewhere. All the help seems to deal with how to burn a VCD and not what to do when the VCD is not working. As I said, I have burned VCDs before and never had a problem before and the only change is the upgrade of Nero from 5.5 to 6.6 (by Upgrade, I mean I uninstalled the 5.5 then installed 6 and updated it using the update on the Nero website).
Please let me know if you can help.
Thanks!

I got a message saying I had a private response waiting on this topic but when I went to the Inbox as instructed, it was empty. I can only guess the person who replied deleted the message or something. Hopefully whoever it was will read this and send the message again. I am really anxious to resolve the problem and a bit disappointed there have been no replies so far. Thanks for whatever help you can give.

OK, I'll try.
When you open "VCD" to load in your files there's a little
checkmark "compliant" or something like that.
check that and the associations with it.
Did you change encoders, or the way that you
render? I hope you're not using the Nero encoder,
it sucks.
My question is, why change to 6 if 5.5 was working so well?
I used 6 and ended up going back to 5, and will continue
until absolutely necessary.
good luck -
I am not sure exactly what you mean about encoding. I have tried with mpg and avi files and let Nero do the stuff necessary to make it a VCD. I have also tried converting an AVI file to an MPG file (as I used to have to do with version 5.5 sometimes). Is encoding something different?
I switched because version 5.5 would work when a disk was burned but I was having problems with the installation and it would randomly close sometimes. Since I was going to reinstall, I just uninstalled version 5.5 then went ahead and installed the new one I purchased. Maybe a bad move? <g> -
What vcdforme is asking you is if you encode AND burn your .avi files with Nero, or if you encode your .avi files with another program like TMPGEnc and then burn with Nero?
The built in encoder in Nero does work, but I can see a big difference in video quality if I encode with another program that only encodes, and then let Nero just do the burning. I am a "newbie" myself, so that is about all that I can add.
BTW, as a former Moderator on a large board of a different subject matter, don't get discouraged by a lack of responses. Boards of this nature receive an unreal volume of "help" requests. I can speak from experience that some days the gurus feel more like helping than on other days, but they will help you. They hang out here because they like helping, sometimes you just have to pick the right day for prompt responses......... -
Thanks! I got an e-mail from Nero support telling me that my problem would be fixed with the new upgrade. I installed the new upgrade (released about Dec 3), and, of course, it made no difference. Very frustrating. I even got another burner and tried burning different disks on that and it would not work.
vcdforme was kind enough to send me an ISO file I could burn to avoid Nero doing anything but the burning and the problem still existed. So, apparently it is not the encoding but is something to do with Nero and my DVD player (even though it used to be fine before I upgraded to the new version of Nero). Very frustrating (the experience and the poor responses from Nero, I appreciate this board since this the only place I have actually found some help)

My question is:
WHY DID YOU UPGRADE (6.x) if what you had before (5.x) was working just fine?Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

The 5.5 was working okay but was having problems with certain types of files (encoding) and the 6 version had support for those. So I followed instructions, deleted 5.5 and installed 6.x. Now I do not know where my 5.5 is and am stuck with 6.x.
