For the last week I've been getting an error message when I try to burn files using Nero. It runs for awhile then I get a message that says that the application has been asked to terminate in an unusual manner. And that it was a runtime error. I was making a disk with several files on it, with a background and menu. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times now. I defraged my harddrive . Everything that I could think of. I even reformatted. And it still happens. I know people say that Nero is kinda quirky, but I really like the setup of the program. Does anyone have a clue or even a theory that could help me solve this? I would greaty appreciate it.

The cleaning tool doesn't really help. I've uninstalled and cleeaned and still doesn't work. I've just reformatted and am going to try it without any updates, as well as any windows updates. I'm going to try and eliminate the cause.

So, now I'm not sure if it was Nero updates still in the registry or a windows update that caused the conflict. But I will continue to experiment around. I'm going to do a restore point right where I'm at now. Then do a few windows updates at a time. I'll make a disc after each update. Until I figure out where the conflict is.

I downloaded and ran the Nero General Clean tool to uninstall all Nero products, and rebooted (during this process just prior to the reboot I also received a message that the Registry Checker had found and corrected errors in the Registry...?).
I reinstalled all Nero components (except the Photo Show Express, which I don't need), from the second-to-last update I had previously downloaded which were Nero 6 Ultra Ed. 6.3.1.20 and Nero Vision Express 2.1.2.18.
So far, so good. Burned a 5 minute test video file with no errors. Will continue tests to see if I can copy DVD. If all seems well, I will again install the current update to see if the problem is recreated. -
I received a most informative
reply email from Nero support in connection with my previous runtime error (I had emailed them the log file created when the error occurred). The reply said that the error occurred because I was trying to read and write from/to the same drive.
So much for Nero tech support. Well, I did get an error when trying to copy a DVD using the same drive, but the software usually handles this task just fine. It simply creates an image on the hard drive, then prompts me to insert a blank disc into the same drive to burn the image.
Moreover, the runtime error occurred when I was trying to burn a DVD from video I had captured from my TV tuner, not when I was trying to copy a DVD.
Anyway, now that it works fine with the prior upgrade, I'm hesitant to reinstall the current upgrade for fear of having to clean and reinstall again.[/list] -
Headless, am wondering if you have had any further success with your problem? Particularly, have you tried the recent 12/3 Nero update? I have not, 'cuz I got rid of the runtime problem by cleaning and reinstalling from the prior update files I had saved...and don't really want to go through it again.

No, I tried them and they gave me a different problem. I did however install the WMA plugin. As well as the mpeg2 decoder.

Ok, I've just gotten thru burning about 4 or 5 different disks in a row. And no problem what-so-ever. I had to reformat over the weekend. Tried the new updates and they wouldn't work at all. Put the one that came with my dvd burner back on. Then added both the WMA plugin and the mpeg2 decoder, and now everything seems to be just fine again. I won't get another download from Nero. All they seem to do is screw things up. And the support team is horrible. But Nero is the easiest to work with. I like the options that I'm given. And the ease with which you can customize the menu. I tried Tmpe and didn't like it at all. So in closing, go with the original software, never get an update . But add the plugin and encoder. Hope this helps anyone else out there having problems.
