  2. It has its benefits though like you don't have to pay for internet access, no accountability and if you hijack a fast connection like a company or university connection well you'd get those movies fast.

Only problem with that, you have to be near someone that is running an unsecure network (usually within 300 ft or so, the average range of most wireless routers). If you're lucky enough, sure - otherwise, no way.

BTW: PeerGuardian (and Protowall) will only protect you from known IP addresses of the tracking companies and you must update it constantly. There's nothing to stop the tracking companies like BayTSP from using an IP from a different location that is not known to the PG community. It's like cops and speeders, they have a radar gun, you have a detector - but if they decide to use a different frequency that your detector doesn't have, you're busted.

Not a perfect analogy, but you get the drift.

However, that said, PG is better than no protection at all. It's possible they will only go after the low-hanging fruit and not bother with someone with the IP address blocking that PG provides. OTOH, it could be a false sense of security.

Like I said before, the only way you might get away with downloading copyrighted files is using an anonymous, encrypted network like the ones I mentioned. However, they are pretty much in their infancy and maybe not quite ready for prime time. They are fairly new and it'll take a while to reach critical mass, just as it took a while for KaZaA and eMule and the others to catch on. I expect as more people are caught downloading, they will begin to consider using these new networks, as at least they make you somewhat anonymous. Hopefully, as they catch on, they will be improved and eventually everyone will use them.

    Not that hard to do.

Take my university for example, I can sit outside with a wireless laptop and pull down a movie sized file in about 5 to 10 minutes. I could probably do the same in the inner city business district just by doing some war walking and finding an unsecured access point.
