As a newbie I realise this may be an ugly way of doing this - but it worked for me! I have several UK DVDs that I bought last time I was there (I am an ex-pat Brit) and did not want to fork out $s to be able to watch them!
1. DVD drive loaded with DVD region free (but may work without - see later).
2. Copy DVD using DVD X-Copy Gold, but change Work Space Folder to somewhere you can easily access.
3. Using IFOEdit use the patch method to convert PAL to NTSC (search this method on this site) and can also convert to region free here!
4. Burn new DVD.
Tips: I disconnect from the internet, turn off BlackIce and Norton anti virus autoprotect during the above procedure

There is simple way too:
You will need:
- DVD Player that can handle both: PAL/NTSC
- TV that can handle both: PAL/NTSC
1.) Insert the disc to the DVD Player and watch the movie. Simple.
I have Pioneer DVD player and Philips TV. Both support PAL/NTSC. This way you will save your nerves :P -
Yeah,
Did not want to spend more money (don't have a DVD player and burner that can handle PAL) - but you are right!
Best wishes from a cheap bastard (and proud of it!) -
That must be a bitch going from "we can play just about everything PAL Land" to NTSC OR NOTHING....I feel for ya' man....I've gone the other way 'round...

Or just convert it during copy with DVDFAB.

Why is it that whenever I see posts like this they use crazy software?
Let me simplify your process.
1. Rip with DVD Decrypter in file mode.
2. Use IFO Edit.
3. Burn. -

" Very easy to use especially if you want to do a Pal-to-NTSC or NTSC-to-Pal DVD conversion. A couple quick settings and let it run. It does take a while to recode but worked great. "

"Does dvdSanta allow conversion of a PAL DVD to NTSC DVD?
Yes it does! I have done that many times. Just load your PAL dvd into dvdSanta and click "Create DVD", make sure NTSC is checked."
So, you could run the dvd through DVDFAB to strip macrovision and make it region free, then re-encode it with DVDSANTA. -

OK - persuaded the wife to buy me a Cyberhome ch dvd 300 for Xmas. Idea is to use it to convert region 2 PAL stuff to region free NTSC - then burn back up using the computer. Problem is I need advice on which video card to buy (2.4 Ghz Pent 4 with 512 M ROM running XP and about 270 gig disc space)? Any info/advice out there? Off to the UK over New Year to see family and have 6 dvds to pick up and return with - so I need back up for use on other players!
Many thanks to all who reply, I am learning a sh*tload.
Seasons greetings to all!

The Cyberhome CHdvd 300 will play PAL discs but the TV needs to accept and decode PAL. Multi-system TV sets are few and far between.

What are the minimum TV set requirements to play a PAL DVD? -
If you go to the link Noahtuck (sp?) posted on 11/21/04 - tells you how to hack the cyberhome ch dvd 300 to convert PAL to NTSC! (as far as I can tell).
Smiffo -
I was under the impression that the Cyberhome 300 model does not correctly convert 16x9 WS PAL DVD discs.
If I am correct then you definately do NOT want it.
The cheapest solution I know of that does work correctly is the Philips DVP-642 which can be bought in USA retail stores for about $69.99

Update
Could not find Cyberhome ch dvd 300 so bought the 320 instead (Target about $39). Hack works fine but maybe a few tips!
1. Response to remote seems a bit slow - be patient.
2. When you do menu 1,9 a grey box with the numeral 1 appears - this is the region code - but there is no indication of this. Use the up/down arrows to change this to 0 and press enter. (Remember no disc in unit).
3. Initially had trouble with this and ran a couple of "normal" dvds through the unit but then the hack worked fine.
This unit was manufactured in Oct 2004.
Thanks for all your help!
Smiffo
PS Only tried this with PAL region 2 (BBC made dvds). -
If you checked the hacks section for the 320, you would have seen that I already detailed the different procedure.
Also, I got mine for $27 at Target. -
Intended to buy the 300 - thus did not check out the 320 info. Sorry I did not see your hack - just trying to spread the good word.
M*&her%$cker about the price though!
Happy Holidays
