AFAIK, Virtualdubmod can open MPEG-2, but cannot encode to it. Best way is to frameserve your DV footage into an encoder like CCE or TMPGENC via Virtualdub.

Ympeg - But it'll cost you. The mpeg1 is free though like TmpgEnc.

there is a free MPEG-2 codec available in the tools section under codecs.

You seem to be missing the point though. Virtualdub cannot output to a MPEG file. EOS.

You must frameserve from virtualdub if you wish to output to MPEG.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Doesn't the VirtualDub mpeg version not even let you output to mpeg.

I was going to try framserving but i don't even understand what it means!

No. virtualdub-mpeg2 enables you to open MPEG-2 files. The other variants of virtualdub all enable you to open MPEG-1 files, but none of the can output to MPEG. Got it ?

All frameserving is is a fancy word for opening a file in one program, doing some things to it, and then instead of saving the output back to a file, you "stream" the output directly into anopther program as input. So instead of saving to an AVI, then opening that AVI in TMPGEnc, you cut off the middleman and output directly to MPEG, but by using virtualdub to frameserve to TMPGEnc.
    If in doubt, Google it.

You use 'frameserving' to transfer a video file directly from Virtualdub to an encoder. It eliminates the generation of an in-between file and saves time and HD space.

    Look here: https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm

Shifty, despite what I said in the other thread, don't be SORRY to ask any questions, we're all here to help each other.

Yes, virtualdub can open your MPEG file, but I don't know how you'll go adding AC3 audio.

Do you want it as AVI or MPEG in the end ???
    If in doubt, Google it.

Don't really mind as long as i can author to dvd in the future. But doesn't and mpeg file have to have mp2 video stream and mp2 audio. Am i right on this one:-

-mv2 file is mpeg video stream
-mpeg file is mv2 video combined with mp2 audio

don't stress about this last quesiton on virtualDub
    but can....

You open a mv2 file then add audio to it and save as mpeg as there in know conversion involved.

Im i bit confused about all this shit

video stream is a m2v file most likely
audio can be ac3, mp2 or wav

No conversion required whatsoever. in combination with your desire to be able to author to DVD at some point, all you need to do is mux (short for multiplex, join in other words) your video and audio together. TMPGEnc can do this for you if you go to file > MPEG Tools, then simple multiplex.

BUT, if you wish to output to DVD, most DVD Authoring packages will accept your M2V and audio file as they are now - separated. So the only reason you would bother multiplexing is if you want to watch it, and not put it to DVD for a while.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If i multiplex it will it become a mpeg file ( with mv2 and ac3 audio) or avi ( with mv2 and ac3 audio). so what is the difference between mulitplex and interleave?\

just another thing about virtualdub refering to beofre, nothing to do with above
Say ac3 doesn't work in virtualdub could i still open a mv2 file in virtualdub and add audio to it (wav or something) then save it as a mpeg file as there is no conversion involved.[/u]

multiplex makes it an MPEG System stream.

If you save to AVI, there is conversion, conversion to whatever codec you choose.

In virtualdub you can open a M2V file and add WAV audio to it if you wish.

Once again (and hopefully for the last time), YOU CANNOT SAVE AS MPEG IN VIRTUALDUB.

I think it's time to stop the questions, and start the doing.

Ask questions when you get stuck.
    If in doubt, Google it.

shifty i'm pretty sure you can use ffdshow to give you a m2v file in vdub. You might be able to do an mpeg but don't think so. you have to save as a dummy .avi and then save as the .m2v file i think but will look again and see.
You can do a similar thing w/YMPEG but it cost money and does not multiplex ither.
    Hope this helps

    An avi of your choosing.

Do you have a native language other than English in which we could say "VirtualDub does not output mpeg-2" so that you could understand us ?

You CAN encode mpeg2 from Virtualdub with YMpeg.

So is it worth a shit? Have you tried it? What kind of results do you get with it? Sounds interesting.

Correct me when and if I'm wrong, but YOU CANNOT SAVE AS MPEG IN VIRTUALDUB (on its own). You CAN encode mpeg2 fro Virtualdub with YMpeg, or you could save yourself the hassle and just frameserve to your favorite encoder anyway. All YMpeg is is a $25 frameserver (it still requires an MPEG encoder), which Virtualdub gives you anyway for free. So the question is, why would you bother spending the $25 and creating an extra step that is totally unnecessary ?

I know where MY $25 is staying ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hi Jimmalenko,
YMpeg is an mpeg1/mpeg2 encoder. You're right of course in saying Virtualdub can only output avi, but YMpeg actually bypasses this -
Quote from Tutorial ... "Start compression by clicking 'Save As AVI' from file menu. The filename you enter here will be a dummy file generated by VirtualDub and will not be usable. Actual output file will be the one which you have configured in YMPEG Configuration dialog.

I haven't tried YMPEG yet beyond simple clip test. I doubt if I'd ever really use it. You see, it DOESN'T do B-Frames, only I- and P-Frames. That makes it pretty worthless for me at this point (and for many of you). Maybe it'll get B-Frames later on...

It is an in-line compression codec, meant to be used as one of many output options for VFW/Directshow apps. It does differ from most codecs in that its final output is an MPEG file, not an AVI file (with or without MPEG compression in it).

Yes, you could use YMPEG as an output option from VDub, but seriously, TMPGEnc or CCE via Frameserving is just about as easy and MUCH more versatile and higher quality, FWIW.

I agree TMPGenc is better quality at the moment, but it's improving all the time. The latest version is a lot better.

  28. mpeg2 is a proprietary codec. IOW, you got to pay to license any encoder you want to use. try looking at www.mainconcept.com for one place to get an mpeg2 encoder

Yes, there really is no Free Lunch with MPEG2...

Might as well pay a decent amount for a very good encoder.

So if i used ympeg i could open my mv2 video file into virtualdub then add the ac3 sound and save as avi,, which would save as mpeg through ympeg.

Back to the topic of framserving what is so good about it compared to just saving it to avi?

what is so good about having as mpeg file
    just not avi

im just getting more and more confused so ive come to this...

Ok the file is AVi the video formats is DV and the audio PCM the file was captured from a vhs tape through a video camera. I want to make the file smaller beacsue it is 16gb and that a pretty big chunk out of my hdd, i want to make it into a samller file and later be able to author it to dvd, when i purchase a dvd writer.
