Some of the files I open with TMPGEnc say "File: "the file name.avi" can not open, or unsupported."
I can't figure out why some of my files will open and some won't. I tried converting them with EO Video with no success. Does anyone know what the problem is? I'm trying to convert them to VCD so I can put them onto a DVD.

Providing there is nothing wrong with the AVI file, the usual cause of problems opening an AVI in TMPGenc is the VFAPI plugin needed to decode the video is either missing or is being intercepted by another plugin.

Under 'Option' -> 'Environmental Setting' - 'VFAPI plug-in' you will see a list of Readers and decoders. Try giving the 'AVI' ones a higher priority (right click and select higher priority, or right-click the others and give them a lower priority), you want the AVI ones to appear at the top of the list. If you have a 'DirectShow' plugin, move this one towards the top aswell.

If you still have trouble, try turning all the plugins off and then turn each one on seperately (leaving all others off) and try opening the AVI, once you have found the right one, move it to the top and then turn all the others back on.
