  1. Hi,

I've burnt a couple dozen discs with no problem. Now suddenly when I put in a blank disc the drive it does not read it and tells me the drive is empty and to put a disc in the drive. I also notice that when the drive is empty, windows explorer will describe the drive as a DVD-RW drive, but once I put a disc in it switchs to a CD drive. It will still read burnt dvds even after this description, but blank ones are not recofnized.

I have not changed my hard ware or software since this happened.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  2. Go to windows device manager and remove the device then re-boot the computer. This will force windows to re-install the device. Be sure to go back and look in device manager to confirm the drive is in DMA mode.

  3. Sorry, but that did not work. It still won't read blanks. Any other suggestions?

  4. When I go into the device manager, the drive is identified correctly but it is listed as a DVD-CD-Rom drive. Shouldn't it be listed as a DVD-RW drive?

  6. OK, Things are getting stranger. I flashed the firmware to 2.18 and it didn't solve the problem. No surprise there since the nec 2.18 is a minor upgrade.

If I start nero and try to burn to the DVD-RW drive, nero refuses because there is no disc. If I load a blank CD in my second lite-on combo drive, windows pops up its screen asking me what I want to do. I tell it to burn in nero and then nero will allow me to burn the dvd that we "not there" before and they burn properly and at the same speed.

I can live with this, but it would be better to fix it. Any suggestions.

It appears to be the new DVD recorder sickness!

Got myself a new Samsung TS-H552. Recorded succesfully a couple dozen DVDs and CDs. Then, all of a sudden, it didn't recognise CDRs at all. Could read CDs though and DVD reading and recording was not affected.

Took it back to the store, explained, and they replaced it on the spot. They stated that 1/3rd of DVDRWs (all makes!!) are returned for the same reason. (!!??).

My suggestion: Take it/ Send it back now that it's new and get a replacement. Thank yourself it failed sooner than later...
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Does anyone having this problem have Roxio burning software installed (EZ CD Creator 5, 6, EZ Media Creator 7)? I was having a similar problem when I loaded a blank DVD disc in my NEC 3500 or LG GSA-4120B. The computer refused to acknowledge there was any blank media or any media at all in any of my drives. Usually a blank window pops up telling me that a piece of blank media that I inserted was recognized, but when my system refused to recognize any blank media the window never appeared. How I soved this problem was to uninstall Roxio EZ Media Creator 7. I then rebooted the system and after reboot reinstalled EZ Media Creator 7. After install I then rebooted the system again and now blank media is recognized again. I can't guarantee that this will work for you, but it worked fine for me. Good Luck!!!

  13. I just got the NEC 3500 the other day bundled with Roxio software. From past experience, I never install bundled software because 9 times out of 10 it's usually crap. That's one of the reasons that it's free.
