  1. What's the best audio codec/format to use with VirtualDub? I'm using the DivX 4.11 codec for video and capturing PCM audio for later compression. The mp3 choice only goes up to 56Kbps which seems horribly low compared to the VBR files I produce with lame from my CDs.

I tried the earlier version of DivX and it didn't work at all, it just stuck at zero frames processed. I tried Ogg Vorbis but the audio got way out of sync with the video (this was with post-compression of a file with perfectly sync'd PCM audio)

I'd like to avoid platform specific codecs like Windows Media. Although my AV machine runs Windows, my main home machine runs Linux, I have a Sun on my desk at work, and I know people with Macs that I might want to loan DivX'd CDs to.

  2. after installing divx 4.x reinstall divx 3.11 and it will reinstall/fix the mp3 codec for higher bitrates.

  3. You could also try LAME or Radium MP3 codecs or download the Nimo codec pack which includes lots of useful codecs and tools. You can find it all at http://www.divx-digest.com/software/index.html
