  1. I can write at 4x on a DVD+r which takes 15 minutes, but when I try to copy the files from the DVD to the HD, it takes way longer, the read speed is supposed to be 16X for DVD-ROM, is my DVD+R not a DVD-ROM? I burned using Nero 5.5 and multisession, is there a way I can burn a DVD+ or -R DVD maintaining the good write speed I have now, but then get as fast if not faster reas speed? All I want to do is copy the files back on the HD at 4x or faster speed. My drives are all set to UDMA in the bios and on the IDE channels...anyone have a suggestion. Thanks for your help.

your dvdr is just that ... a dvdr not a dvd-rom ... almost all dvd writers are set at 2x for reading dvd video files .... however depending on the writer that you have it may be possible to get hacked firmware that removes this restriction .... alternatively fit an extra dvd drive (reader only) that dont normally have this restriction ... the lite-on drives are the favoured drives by most people on this site, with many reporting read speeds of 12x or higher

  4. I have a plextor 712-a and the data on the disc is targa files, not dvd video files...do you think that would make a difference?

I also did a test on the write speed in Nero on the HD and it said 2.5 MB/s...maybe that has something to do with it...funny how the DVD burner can write at 15 MB/s but the HD cannot?

You don't give any details about your pc system ... so its difficult to say but its is possible that the read speed is resticted on the drive .... however there could be other issues with your pc that is slowing things down ... what are your udma settings for your drives .... are the hard drives 5600rpm or 7200 rpm ... are they ata 66/100/133/166 etc... try to supply more information or if you can borrow a dvd rom (reader... not a writer) from a friend and fit it in your pc and test the rip speed
