  1. Ok, obviously I have no idea what I'm doing, just thought a dvd burner would be cool. I had no idea what all this involved! Anyway, I have downloaded several episodes of some of my favorite programs, and would like to burn them all to dvds so I can get the files off of my computer. They take up way too much room. They are all mpg files. What is the best program and best (SIMPLEST) way to go about this? Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide.

If they are DVD compliant (ie they meet the DVD specs for file type, resolution etc.) then you can author and burn them using something like TMPGenc DVD Author.

To check their attributes you can use avicodec. Link below for DVD specs.

  3. First, learn what a DVD-compliant file IS - Definitions listed on the left.

Then, find some utilities that can examine a file and give the specs - Utilities listed on the left.

Next, obtain some re-encoding tools if needed - on the left.

Then, determine the requirements of your authoring program, and your DVD player. This includes audio and media types which may be within spec but refused by your software or hardware - reviews of both on the left.

Also, get some RW disks so you can get the raw files off the HD and at least play them on the PC while you examine all the above options. Note that if PC playback rather than standalone DVD player is your goal, your problems are already over. Just burn the files to disk.

No, it's not as easy as you were led to believe. But, it's not that bad, either. Once you learn some of the terminology and areas you need to be concerned with, it's fairly easy.
