What is the best free registry cleaner type thing. I am scared to install any such program from Google without prior advice because I don't want spyware.

Adaware scans your registry. Its not spyware, its completely safe. You can get it at www.download.com , just do a search for ad-aware.

Depends what OS you have.....which you didn't mention 888888, nor did you mention what type of computer you have. Nor what specific issue you got.
Frankly, just use Restore & return to a time things worked right for you. -
