Hi, I need to convert a few Pal Videos to Ntsc format, I'm from the UK, So obviously the output from my Video Recorder will be Pal.So hopefully someone can tell me if this is the correct way to do the conversion.
Already have a brand new Jvc s-vhs recorder, So I was thinking of going to ebay.com & buying a brand new high quality video recorder, then when it arrives Hook my Pal video into the Tv then using a voltage converter to enable the Ntsc video to work here, then hook it up via a scart cable to the scart in the Pal Video, Shove in the tape that I wish to duplicate into the Pal machine then put a blank Vhs into the Ntsc, Press play on the Pal & then record on the Ntsc & hopefully that should give me an Ntsc output.
Can anyone please tell me will this work(give me an NTSC Tape Output) or is there an easier way of doing it myself, Thanks James..

It's not just a matter of voltages and power line frequencies but the entire way television signals are generated from one system to the next. What you propose simply won't work. Best to take it somewhere that does conversions as it's the cheapest way to go. If you want to do it yourself, you'll need 2 digital standards converter vcrs or a pal vcr and and an ntsc vcr and a pal to ntsc standards convertor between them. A costly proposition...
Also, NTSC decks don't use SCART... -
It doesn't work that way.

It really is a private thing & I really would prefer to do it myself.
I know about the Tv signal but I have a brand new 50" rear projection Tv that can handle Ntsc Signals(I know because my friend bought an xbox while on holiday in the States & it plays back perfectly on the Tv), The video can also handle Ntsc tapes, So will I still need those converters, Thanks James.. -
This might be thinking outside the box...but...take it for what it's worth.
If it was me, I would rip the VHS tape to PAL DVD, alot of DVD players can convert on the fly so a person with an NTSC system can enjoy British/PAL content (and vice-versa) very easily today...
Just a thought...HTH -
That is how I do it....Umbearto's way. Get that tape to a DVD first....no matter if it is NTSC or PAL. It is MUCH easier to find a converting DVD player than it is to find a converting VCR.
Wanna pay up to $600 for a true converting VCR?

I own this VCR...though it is back in the states right now..... I plan to bring it back with me on my next visit though.....GREAT VCR.

"Yep, or convert your PAL VHS to PAL DVD, pop it in your DVD player & switch it to NTSC and dub it onto your VCR (switched to NTSC 3.5)The DVD player does the conversion on-the-fly, and you just record it as an NTSC signal.

Okay once I've converted the Pal Vhs to Pal Dvd,
How do I switch the Dvd player to Ntsc
I'm not sure how to switch to Ntsc 3.5 although my current Pal Vcr can play Ntsc tapes(Unless you are talking about buying a new Ntsc Video )
Sorry for not knowing too much about it, It's the first time I've ever done this(Pal Vhs to Ntsc Vhs). -
Well you need a DVD player that plays PAL & NTSC. My old Viewmaster cost me AUS$75 and plays everything you throw at it!
And your VCR needs to be dual-format too. Most of them are. You need to be able to switch between NTSC 3.58 and NTSC 4.43. If yours doesn't do that, I'm sure you could pick one up for next to nothing. Usually it will be written on the front panel of the VCR: "NTSC 3.58/4.43".
Set the DVD player to NTSC output (usually via your remote control). Do this even tho' your DVD is in PAL format! The DVD player should convert it on-the-fly (well mine does anyway!). Then set your VCR to NTSC 3.58, and dub away. You can then switch your VCR to "Play NTSC on PAL TV" (or something like that) and check that it dubbed correctly (ie it's not black'n'white, colours aren't "greened" out, etc).
Just remember that when doing this, a normal 4-hour tape only takes about 3 hours of NTSC! (It speeds up or something)...
It works for me, but I don't offer guarantees with my method! :P
Good luck.
(PS: I saw a review for a new cheap DVD player in the newspaper yesterday, the Zensonic Z330, for AUS$150 that does the PAL/NTSC thing... But I imagine most players do this. It got a decent review, anyway.)
EDIT: I re-read what equipment you have, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do this with what you got already!? Check your manuals! Cheers... -
