I need to read a novel for analysis for my "Psychology and Religion" class. Basically, I need to analyze and write a paper making connections with theorists we have gone over(freud, jung, maslow, frankl, adler). Any suggestions?
EDIT: I was thinking of analyzing brave new world or 1984...partially beacause I've already read em.![]()

But seriously, I think one of those could make a strong case of how something powerful could control all aspects of your life.
I dont want to start a religous discussion...I just need some ideas.

Analysing a book you've already read and liked will be much easier and much more thorough than one you may choose to read and may not like.
That would be the route I would suggest, or take if I were you. -
Fahrenheit 451 is pretty interesting... sort of Orwellian. 1984 is also a good idea.

THX 1138........

how about The Handmaid's Tale?

Brave New World and 1984 are too obvious. Crime and punishment
would be fantastic but too much work unless you are are honours minded.
Dare I suggest the short novel of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. It has all
the elements you require. Another good choice could be any of the better
known Grim's Fairy Tales. You'd be able to go to town on Jung and
Freud, the most difficult of the bunch, with any if those.
In your position I'd risk confronting the university with an analysis
of Stranger in a Strange Land- you would either achieve accolades
or be cast down into the depths.
I bet Ford you end up doing Brave New World
-edit- maybe safest to work with a popular classic from your
country that your teachers will be well famililiar with. Catcher in
the Rye, Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Moby Dick,
A Christmas Carol, Mississippi Writings, etc -
It's only a 20 point assignment and I've gotten perfects on all the tests so far so I have enough points lined up(5 questions at the end of tests are extra credit) so even if I didnt turn in the assignment, I would still get an A. So I dont really want to spend a lot of time on something I already have an A in and work on something that really needs work. I'll be take the northcat way....thanks.
-
OK...let me get this straight
You already have an "A"....and if you didn't even turn in the assignment you'd still get an "A"
Well maybe this would sound better coming from someone else, but why even do it then? Seems to me, that if it is a psychology class then the Prof. should grasp why you did not feel the need to do the assignment and should appreciate on an intelectual level you skipping it.
Had I known that, my advice would have been to have 24 beers and say **** it. (if you are over 21 of course)

Well, the reason I want to do it is because I want to pad my grade as much as I can. The final in the class is a paper about the "student's religious history" and making connections from what we've learned. From what I hear, he grades it very hard. Even through I'm pretty good at writing papers, I still want to be sure.

"The Source" deals with Judaism, Christianity and the Islam religions and how they evolved. Mostly Judaism as it's based in what is present day Israel. The timeline spans milleniums. -

You've read Skinner? Consider the question from the angle of operant conditioning.
Pull! Bang! Darn! -
I've read skinner before, but not in this class.
-
Too bad, easy target. I don't suppose Eric Voegelin then, either? Voegelin has nasty things to say about guys like Skinner. Determinism, cult of rationalism replacing religion, blah blah... :P

Pournelle and/or Niven.
Anything by Asimov.
Arthur C. Clarke.
Anyone else, generally, has no science behind them. Just jumped on the bandwagon. Hey, scifi is hot, let's write about it. -
Hey George, no serious treatment of religion in Asimov. :P Although he does use the psychohistory plot gimmick in the Foundation series.
Offline mentions in passing a Dostoyevsky novel. Lots of grist for your mill there. There's also Notes from Underground. All rather depressing stuff, though.
Hmm, psychology and religion, how about Camus or Solzhenitsyn?Pull! Bang! Darn!
