I was just over at my friends house trying to show him how to rip DVDs with his PC. Well, I downloaded DVDecryptor and then put in a region 1 dvd ona region 2 set dvd drive. I noticed that without changeing the firmware, DVDecryptor has an option to slowly read all the data from the dvd and rip it. Although it did take about 30 minutes to rip, It worked and he had a perfect DVD Folder ready to be burned(or attempt to be )

Is there any way MTR could have a feature like this? It would come in handy for those of us with newer PBs until the region free firmeware comes out.

I deleted the dvd player that comes with X and use VLC to play dvd's. The region code shouldn't matter to MTR if the OS X software isn't present. Otherwise, when you insert an out of region disc and you don't change the software and hardware region code(or can't anymore) OS X will spit out the disc. You might also try Apple>System Preferences>Hardware> CDs and DVDs>When You Insert a> Video DVD>"Ignore" or "open" (and select MTR from the Finder browser). That way the disc is not mounted as a video disc by OS X.
If you have firewire on your mac, get a Pioneer 108 fw dvd burner(>$150) and flash that drive region-free and use that drive to rip. I don't like the quality of the internal drive mac uses anyway. They're limited to plus R and are pickier about media than most third-party dvd drives.

For now, the methods we use to crack CSS keys don't work with DVDs from other regions on Matshita UJ-815, 816 and 825 drives with default RPC2 (region-locked) firmware. We're kind of exploring alternative extraction methods, but for now, you'll need to install RPC1 firmware on those drives (if available) or use a different drive. For most DVD drives, this is never an issue, and MTR can rip DVDs from other regions, but for those with the UJ-825 drive, you'll need to find a different DVD drive to use until RPC1 firmware becomes available.

Unless you have my drive, which used to rip region 2 stuff perfectly until it died. I hope my new one rips region 2 just as well.

Note: It didn't just up and die, some idiot broke the rules and brought a glass of eggnog too close to it. So it wasn't defective.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

Im not as retarded as you think, if you read any posts on region locked drives, VLC cannot decode a different region dvd, other than the ones from tht region(as goes for MTR also). I have a DVR-108 in a firewire case, and dont really like lugging it around when I travel. Id much rather have the built in drive read them for me.

Its a Matshita 825 and I am waiting eagerly for the firmware update. If it doesnt come out soon enough I might have to have my friend help me take it out of my laptop and flash it on his PC.

You might need to get an adapter IDE cable, but those are pretty cheap. Good luck with that. VLC can play (and MTR can rip) DVDs from other regions on all region-locked drives except the Matshita UJ-815-825 (and possibly some HL-DT-ST drives). Apart from those exceptions, MTR (and VLC) work great for whatever region DVDs.

[Edit] Fixed naming of Hitachi HL-DT-ST manufacturer [/Edit]

He already has an adaptor because he has a PB 15 inch. Hes into the whole "VOID every single warranty known to man" type things. He said he could help me do it soon, but im skeptical about opening my mac. Any suggestions on this?

Don't lose any screws... it helps if you draw a sketch of the powerbook on a piece of paper, and place the screws in the appropriate locations... Apart from that, it's not too hard. I've mucked around inside powerbooks before, and as long as you have phillips-head and torx screwdriver sets, you should be fine. I'm sure your friend knows all about proper static energy procedures for working inside computers...
