So will this finally end the desire of people to make 'backups' of discs they own? (since the disc won't become unplayable)

Well, you know most DVDs homemade or commercial don't have this technology and won't for close to 3 years if you assume the price curve holds true.

But seriously, this sounds great! I love old movies, and most places only have a single well OLD copy of old movies. You can't begin to imagine the horrors that I sometimes get from the library, Netflix, Blockbuster, etc. Add to that we just invested in a car DVD system. I can't imagine even one of these puppies standing up too long to a car load of kids on a long trip! Right now, I only let them have a back-up copy that frankly I consider disposeable once it hits the car. Who knows, one of these might last a week.

This won't stop me from making backups. Simple reason is regardless of the coating, it will do nothing for the......

......"While holding DVD in hand and walking, it slips out of hand, falls to floor, gets stepped on and cracks" syndrome. I've done that more than once over the years.

Resistance to fingerprints and scratches is great but they aren't the only reasons for backups.

actually if you read and view the image at that site the disc is NOT scratch-resistant; it apparently scratches just like any disc would. The difference is that a player is able to play back this scratched disc. or am i mistaken?

I was wondering if those were the samething Tag? I've seen those, but the price didn't match the one quoted in the article. $3 a pop in a 5 pack, about half that for bulk. So not all that much more than any other good quality disk. The article makes it sound like this is new, and the price is about $6 a piece.

There is no such thing as a "sratchproof" disc,maybe "sratchresistant".If you give one of these to a 6 year old and after a week there are no scratches then it can be called "scratchproof".

Tag, the ad says the max write speed is only 2X. If you use these for backup it better be unattended late at night.

i just bought a 25 pack of 2X dvdr's because they were on sale for 3 bucks. I can do other things while burning... don't knock the slow speed. It was a great deal!

Isn't this old new? cause the tdk armor discs have been in the market for quite a while. i remember cdfreaks doing a review on those discs. they scratched the discs with almost everything. i remember they also went to the extreme by scraping it with steel wool, and yes in this instance there were lots of scratches on the disc.

Yeah, but if you look at the image, it clearly reads "4X".

Also, Rima is selling what appears to be the same product HERE in 10-packs for $34.00. Definitely 4X write.

It's worth it for valuable data. While all dvd-r medias play on my dvd player, the tdk media had a hard time loading in my player, but does play eventually after series of about 6 tries.

As for scratching, the disc is fricking strong. i gave the disc to my little sister and told her to scratch the living crap out of it, so she decided to go rub readable side againt the rough carpet rug and finished it off against dirt & sand. after washing it, only the stack ring area came out badly ruin with dents, but not the data, not even a scratch on it till. the matrix reloaded movie that was recorded on the disc still played fine. got 13 of them it for a $1.08 each at radio shack when they had the '$5off anything over $5coupon'. :P

That is nifty, but most people who are "backing up" DVDs are simply copying them and don't own the original *gasp* (I expect somebody to pipe in about how that's nonsense, but it isn't). Except in severe cases, there's no need to backup a DVD anyway. Just don't use it as a drink coaster in the backyard and they withstand a lot of abuse, even now.

I can definitely understand the need to backup a kid's movie though.

I use these for archive masters of family DVDs I produce, and for some customers if they want some extra protection. Nothing is indestructable, but these are damn close.

I can get them for around AUD$5.25. 2x is still only 30 minutes a burn - some people are so impatient.

An hour miniDV takes up about 13 gigs, doesn't it? Do you copy the raw data to a few of these...? I'm thinking about how to backup my master minidv too...
