  1. I want to make backups of my .avi files since I'm starting over with my computer soon, but when I burn them to a cd-r some of them have a waaaaay longer running time than they should, and the video doesn't even show up.

    How can this be fixed?

P.S. I'm sorry if there is a thread already where this could have been easily answered, but I have searched all over these forums and I probably didn't recognize it if I saw it. <--- I'm new to this sorta stuff.

AVI? What kind of AVI? There are dozens of file types under that definition. My guess would be DIVX or XVID with MP3 VBR audio, which is one of the common formats that can cause some of the problems you describe. Are you converting the files to MPEG or keeping as AVI?

Run them through AVIcodec or Gspot and find out what you are dealing with. Standard advice is to demux the audio with Virtualdub and convert the audio to a better format.

Or, your problem may be entirely different. Some details would help. Filling out your computer details would also help considerably.

Sorry, but details are needed before advice can be given.

Umm.. yes, I guess you're right. I play the .avi's in DIVX, where they work fine.

No, I was leaving them as .avi's. Should I try converting them to mpeg?

Well, my OS is Windows XP/Home Edition/Vesion 2002, it's a Compaq laptop, and what I'm trying to use to burn the files with is Roxio's Data CD maker-thingy.

Oh, and I tried GSpot, thanx. = )
But to be honest, I don't really know what to make of what it's telling me. =* (

If you're just burning them for archival purposes, just start a new data disk and add the AVI. All you're doing then is basically copying the AVI to a disc, so the filesize and running time and everything should not be touched. If it is getting modified, throw that POS software you are using.

    very, very simple.
    If in doubt, Google it.
