  1. I really want to buy a DVD player that supports DivX/Xvid files.
    Unfortunately, the one I have my eye on does not support subtitles (is there any DVD player that does yet?).

    So I wonder:
    * Is there an application (or an easy and fast method) that can combine a DivX/Xvid clip with a .sub/.srt subtitle file into one .avi file?

    You must reencode the video if you want permanent subtitles. You can use virtualdub and the vobsub filter, https://www.videohelp.com/srtsubsvirtual.htm . Instead of frameserving you save as a new divx.
