I really want to buy a DVD player that supports DivX/Xvid files.
Unfortunately, the one I have my eye on does not support subtitles (is there any DVD player that does yet?).
So I wonder:
* Is there an application (or an easy and fast method) that can combine a DivX/Xvid clip with a .sub/.srt subtitle file into one .avi file?

You must reencode the video if you want permanent subtitles. You can use virtualdub and the vobsub filter, https://www.videohelp.com/srtsubsvirtual.htm . Instead of frameserving you save as a new divx.
DivX dvd players with switchable subtitle supports:
https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&Submit=Search&Search=Search&divxsubs=...y=Name&hits=25 (be sure to read the commmmments)
