  1. I just found this:
CHRONOMIUM (free download), is the first liveCD GPL dedicated to the automatic disinfection of hit by viruses computers under Windows.

The NTFS partitions are borne through the use of captive-ntfs and the antivirus engaged is CLAM.

As CLAM only allows to identify viruses but not to remove them, 2 versions of CHRONOMIUM are available:
    - the "GPL" version : only CLAM AV, identification of the infection
    - the "Community" version (non-GPL) : CLAM AV et F-Prot (the latter, non-GPL, is free of charge for personal use only)

CHRONOMIUM is based on a Knoppix 3.4 reduced to about 150Mo, with update of the signature basis via the Internet, a USB key, a diskette or a hard disk. The audience targeted is that (very numerous at the time) of the windows users who find themselves infected without knowing what to do.

The goal aimed at is to bring them the means to cope by themselves, through a very simple interface (text mode, gallicized), and a procedure as automated as possible, particularly for the update of the virus signatures basis.

This is a linux live-cd distro (based off of debian) that is specifically designed to detect and remove windows viruses! This looks like a great tool for protecting your pc. One major advantage that it has is that if you were to run this, there are no windows background programs running (since windows isn't running) and therefore it should be easier to eliminate the viruses.

    Reations?

  2. Nice! I will try it. How does it update though? Do you need to burn a new CD every time you use it, or does it auto-update on the Internet every time you boot from the CD?

I'm glad your going to try it! I have a slower connection so I will download it tonite and let you what I think tomorrow. As far as updating, I'm really not sure but if its like other live-cds you will have to redownload the iso when a new version comes out.

Maybe, but if your computer is very bogged down with viruses and it looks like your only option is a ful reformat/destructive reinstall, this looks like a pretty good idea to try first. Just something to have on-hand incase you need it (I'm not saying that this is something you should use everyday).

  6. Last night, I started downloading the 150MB version. I had to abort it. Now, I can only find the 68.8MB version. I take it this is the one I need?

I downloaded the GPL version, and am just going to try it out now. I will post back my results.
Also I found another similar disk, called System Rescue CD, found here:

  8. That is the page I am downloading them from. I downloaded the Community version since it appears to be the most complete (read: newbie-friendly) version. 68.8MB.

  12. It worked - text-based, just boots up, updates over the Internet (very quick) and starts scanning. I didn't leave it to do everything, though - had to sleep.

Thanks for suggesting it - it has now joined my arsenal against everything nasty and infectious trying to get my PC!
