  1. Hi. I need help.

I have now purchased a decent DVD player; Sony DVP-NS430; but cannot player recorded DVD's properly. I used to have a cheap DVD player, so i decided to spend a few pounds, hoping to solve the issue. I am a novice. Here is my setup

    Nero 6
    Liteon LDW-411SX UBS rewriter
    Datasafe -R DVD's

I have looked on the website

and cannot find any real compatible media that has been tested with model. I really need some help, as every DVD that i backup, does not play back properly. It breaks up at the end of the DVD.

Am I doing anything wrong? Should I use another program? Should I use other media.

You help is GREATLY APPRECIATED! I am desperate, as I am tired of wastying media.

    Thanks again

    Scott

problem is htat SONY is famous for not supporting recorded media.. cdr/rw dvdr/rw.. only thing i have found that works pretty well in SONY DVD players is richojpnR01 or ritekR03 +R, with bitsetting to DVD-ROM but your burner needs to be able to do that..
if dvd+R set to DVD-ROMs is possible then try that

most of hte liteons i have ran accross al all able to bitset with either liteon utility found on their page or goto codeguys page.. there is a liteon forum dedicated to this stuff

If it's breaking up at the end of the end of the DVD, the issue is dye-spread, and the cause is using crappy media.

I have a Sony NS-315 player that's a few years old, and it almost plays coffee-can lids. It's not at all picky.

Ditch the Datasafe and get yourself some Taiyo Yuden TYG02 (8X)

  4. The new Sony DVD players are far less picky than the older ones were. They are about as good or better than the rest of them for playing debatable discs these days.

  5. What's your backup method? If, for instance, you use DVDShrink, try this: Go to Edit-> Preferences. Set custom DVD size, enter 4200. Might let you get some use out of your media without throwing them away. Then get better stuff in future.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

Yes I am using DVDshrink, forgot to mention that!!!

What will happen if I change the settings? Will this prevent the problem occuring?

    Thanks

They're only about the best you can get Remember that the brand name doesn't mean much ...that Memorex media you buy is made by someone else. Maxell 4X DVD-R media is made by Taiyo Yuden or Ritek. The package will usually say "Taiwan" or "Japan". Typically the Japanese-made media is the best of all. Taiyo is made in Japan

Other good media is Fuji, Ricoh (Japan), TDK, Sony, Pioneer, Apple (if you can find any), a few others.

Some particularly crummy media is CMC Magnetics, Ritek (not too bad yet but getting to be crummy), and Princo.

There's a whole slew of media between these extremes that works well in some writers and not at all in others. Or it will playback jerky or blocky in some and not others. This is mediocre media. Or "media-ocre"

Check out Lordsmurf's site about media. It sheds a lot of light on the issue of who makes what:

  9. Thanks for your help.

I have looked at the site and see that I have to be careful of 'fake media'.

    Many thanks again!

  10. Go to Best Buy, use the coupon from Circuit City and get TY, do it this week before it ends. Just make sure the spindles say made in Japan.

What it does is lower somewhat the target output size. You could go to 4000, and some would recommend that. Going lower is not likely to help.

Bad media will have problems with the dye being properly spread to the rim. The result is you get glitches towards the end of your backup. You might, MIGHT be able to make usable backups by doing as suggested.

    Good luck.

  12. I can sympathise with the original poster - my Sony is a right bugger too.

I suggest checking out my posts in the threads below. They include details of the discs my 535 really gets on well with, and has done on a consistent basis.

    Good luck.

PS - some of the media is a little dated now, but I haven't noticed the decline in Ritek quality that others have, and the new Fuji dyes are excellent.

It's a common practice to set the burn size smaller to improve the odds of getting a good burn. Yes you can do that easily in DVDShrink by just taking it off automatic and sizing it manually

Panasonic standalone recorders are designed not to exceed 4GB burn size. They do this intentionally to improve the odds of getting good burns with as many different quality levels of media. Can you imagine the customer support calls they would get if they allowed you to burn all the way out to the edge? Everyone who used Princo would get bad burns - right off the bat

You seem to have left out Maxell's own 4x DVD-R media made in Japan. It is possible to distinguish TYG01 Maxell from MXLRG02 Maxell by looking at the discs, but that might be getting a bit anal
